I think you are right in that the Leafs are looking for a right handed defenceman with term which may or may not be available. I actually think that the Leafs may have to consider trading Nylander in the future to free up capspace for a quality defenceman around a similar age because the team may have too much money tied up in their 4 core forwards which is hurting their defence. This is actually the opposite problem of what the Sharks have too much capspace tied up in their defence.
Just a thought - swap Nylander with part retained Burns. Could work for both teams.
But to be on the safe side, add a condition on the SJ side of the trade such as if the player doesn't get certain amount of points in certain amount of games the team has to pay up some pick as a compensation.
For example if Burns plays over 135 games and doesn't score over 100 points combined in 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons SJ will have to give up 2023 1st or 2nd round pick or something like that. That way they don't just get absolutely fleeced with a bad contract on their hands while losing a great forward in Nylander...
