I wouldn’t want to give up a 2020 1st, so I converted it to a 2021 1st. (Lottery protected).

Would Dallas fans want this with Harley possibly coming up next season?

SJS definitely says no. They could get a huuuuuge return for Burns while eating $3M. That is not a huge return.

Yeah I think if SJ is retaining $3M they would expect to get a lot more. That return there would be more feasible if SJ was only retaining around 1.5M or so and even then you’d probably have to throw in a mid range prospect on top

Johns (good story but nothing their especially now with the injury trouble)
Jannmark seems like a guy every Dallas fan is tossing out.

So basically just a first for burns + 3mil retained. Not even for a 2020 first.

Easy easy easy no.

Honestly, Dallas doesn’t even make an offer for him. Between Lindell, Klingberg, Heiskanen, and Harley on the way, the Stars really aren’t in the market for another top-4 defenseman. If the Stars are going to lose a 1st Round Pick & add $5M+ in salary cap, it’ll be for a position that they are in need of.

Agreed, no reason for Stars to move for Burns.

Someone else proposed it. It doesn’t seem plausible from either side. But from a Dallas point of view, would you pull the trigger? If Harley is gtg next season, we have an affordable back end for at least two more seasons.

I agree. Someone else proposed it, but I was curious about a Dallas perspective. I’m not sure what the Dallas side would be willing to give with where we’re at. It’s not good for SJ in my opinion, but that still doesn’t make it good for Dallas in a season or two.

This is exactly what I was thinking after seeing the original post. If you could add a player, what position and where would you slot them? OR what is needed offensively?

With the system that the Stars use, I'd be real hesitant to bring in anyone. Does Dallas need more forward scoring? Absolutely, but I seriously doubt any player's ability to come into this system and produce. A prime example of this would be Pavelski. Came from San Jose to Dallas and went from a 65-point player to a guy that will be lucky to be a .5 PPG player by the end of the year.

The only reason Dallas is even remotely competitive is because of the fact that they have the best goaltending duo in the NHL right now. If Bishop and/or Khudobin regress to the mean, Dallas will be lucky to find themselves in a playoff spot. Their defense, while good, isn't what it was last season and their offense is absolutely anemic. Given how old Dallas' roster is, if I'm the GM, I don't add at the trade deadline. I trying to boost my prospect pool, because Dallas is going to need it sooner rather than later. My biggest focus would be on bringing in Gerard Gallant. The system that Montgomery & now Bowness have utilized has really crippled this team's potential Cup chances anytime over the next year or so. We need to get a system in place that doesn't rely so heavily on the guys in goal.

Our most significant area of need is a legitimate scoring prospect. I like Thomas Harley, and think he's going to be a solid NHL player, but how the Stars skipped over guys like Kaliyev & Tomasino during the 2019 Draft is absolutely baffling. Both would have been massive pieces in our system. I draft Perreault/Nybeck/Simontaival at the 2020 Draft, and look at potentially adding another pick/prospect or two during the offseason. I'm not saying I'd move them immediately, but I'd be listening to offers on some of my veterans, including Radulov.

O if I'm DAL I'm pulling the trigger and running away fast. It's an absolute steal.

I would say that the defensive system has made the goalies better. I’m sure you could come back and give me stats involving second chances, quality scoring chances against, and the likes to either support or argue it. I’m not going to argue either way. The mindset is defense first and the goalies benefit.

Gallant might be the guy. Bones shouldn’t be the head coach next season.
