I remembered the looks of Jim Benning and Joe Sakic (Both Nucks and Avs were dead last) were priceless when they realized they lost the draft lottery. Now it looks like Pettersson and Makar are the best players of the draft class aside from Heiskanen.

Actually Drouin was the 3rd pick. The Bolts really could use of Seth Jones instead of Sergachev/Drouin.

Barkov was the 2nd overall pick, which at the time was a controversial pick. Nowadays, drafting Barkov with the 2nd pick is considered the best thing because he is a monster.

I know he was, but Drouin was apparently high on Avs draft board so they would have probably picked him over Barkov. There was rumours of before Roy showed up and told them to dont be dumb, the head of scouting had MacK 3rd or 4th on their list and had Drouin at the top (having Stastny Duchene and ROR already on the team, Wingers vs another C)

can't really blame them. He was CHL player of the year even though he had MacKinnon inflating his stats.

Funny how that all works out in the end. Draft reshuffling Avs got MacKinnon Makar and Byram. The what could have been scenerio if they wouldnt have moved its mind boggling

The Memorial Cup that year influenced the draft order. MacKinnon and Jones were neck-in-neck for the first overall pick and both played in the tournament. Jones' performance comparative to Mac and Drouin is what caused him to drop a few spots.

I think Tampa rationalized that Drouin would do well with an elite center which is why they opted to pick him over Jones.

i think you have to put hughes with mackinnon to see what happens.

I still would have done the Kadri trade. Especially to acquire his skillset and toughness. Despite his short fuse, he's the complete player the Avs needed. With Hughes / Kadri, Center lines could have been:

Hughes
Jost
