The first part i agreed with you.
I know, I was just reinforcing the point.

The second part Erne is more than his points, he knows his role. Benning is an ok bottom pair dman, they have similar value
No they don't. Benning is a very good 3rd pairing right-shot defenseman and pretty good when playing up the lineup in the top-4. See comment #7 in this thread for more info:

If you look at goal differential since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, you'll see who is "winning" their minutes and who isn't.
Erne: 41 GF - 45 GA (47.67%)
Benning: 142 GF - 116 GA (55.04%)
Goal differential relative to teammates is even more important, because Erne spent most of this time on the best team in the league and Benning did not.
Erne: -4.27 GF% Rel (16-19) / -50.00 GF% Rel (19-20)
Benning: +6.78 GF% Rel (16-19) / +30.00 GF% Rel (19-20)
Another way to measure game impact is Goals Above Replacement, or GAR. Here are their numbers for the past 3 years:
Adam Erne
16-17: -2.0
17-18: +1.1
18-19: +2.9
Total: +2.0
Matt Benning
16-17: +8.6
17-18: +5.4
18-19: +10.6
Total: +24.6
GAR/60 shows the game impact adjusted for ice-time, useful because Erne wasn't a full-time NHLer until last year:
Erne: 0.104 (#20 on his team among forwards who played over 100 minutes)
Benning: 0.493 (#1 on his team for defensemen who played over 100 minutes)
And this is without touching the fact that depth wingers don't hold nearly the same value as RHD. Erne was just traded for a 4th round pick, Benning is likely worth a high-2nd.
