Description
I doubt value is there, but Ryan (7.25M) and Gudbrason (4M) + Johnson (3.25M) both cancel out perfectly in terms of cap. Could something like this actually happen? I could see pieces being added to the deal for sure.

I don't have a problem with the sens taking on Gudbranson if there is a deal out there, but I don't think there's a price to get Ottawa to take JJ. I wouldn't do 3 years of Ryan for 4 years of Johnson straight up.

Gud makes more sense because he can at least play in the top six (even if I don't think he's very good at all). He at least brings size and toughness, and it's not like Ottawa is swimming in RD at the moment.

JJ wouldn't work because the sens are pretty flush with young LD, and aren't likely wanting to pay a guy 3.25mil to sit in the press box for 4 years.

Honestly if Ryan can put up points then why not go all in and he can be a Phil replacement

I think The Boob could fit well with Pittsburgh, I just can't see Ottawa retaining the Salary to make it happen. The other option could be a Ryan for Gudbransson+Hornqvist package, but even at 5.3, that 4th year on Hornqvist is scary because Ottawa might be flying pretty tight to the cap by then, but if they just stayed with Bobby, he'd be off the books by then.

Ryan's contract is head and shoulders worse than Johnson's. In a trade around Ryan for Johnson, Ottawa is adding, considerably. And that's not even including the fact that Ryan will need to be protected in the Seattle draft.

I realize that if Ottawa got relegated to the AHL they still wouldn't make the playoffs... but don't try making your roadkill garbage out to be Filet. No one is buying it.

Yeah, it really really really is. Johnson's contract is bad... but it is not near the train wreck that Ryan's is.

Bobby Ryan is at worst, a 3rd line scorer making way too much money. Jack Johnson is no longer an NHL caliber player in my opinion. The game has totally passed him by.

For a team in Ottawa's situation, who won't have to worry about the cap for 2-3 years anyway, having a middle six winger making 7.25×3 is way better than having an AHL LD making 3.25x4. Easier to have 1 of 12 forward spots taken up by a bad contract, than 1 of 3 LD spots. The 4th year could also pose a problem, as the sens will likely be flying close to the cap by then, with guys like Chabot, Tkachuk, Batherson, Brannstrom all off ELCs by then.

Different teams value different things in different situations, but the Ryan deal is better for Ottawa than The Johnson deal.
