I’ve seen lots of Alexyev vids and he looks good. He was rated highly in his draft year and shows a lot of potential. But adding an aging vet who has gotten 47 points year over year, and will start declining, and a, at most #5 LHD doesn’t get a player like Laine. Apart from Carlson, there isn’t much that would interest the Jets. Poor trading partners
I totally agree with you, if the Jets can afford both Connor and Laine, and still have room to fix their blue line. On the other hand, if they have to pick one, they probably pick Connor, who got a couple more goals last year, and is trending up.
Then they look to trade Laine for a 2nd line wing, a #4 defenseman, and a top defensive prospect, because Laine will leave a hole, Buff is out, and Chiarrot left. Djoos broke his leg last summer, and started slow, but in his last 18 games he got 7 even strength points, a pace for 33. That's top-four skill. He's won a Cup and has always been a plus player. He's not Pionk, but you already have Pionk.
Laine had 50 points last year and was -24 on a team with great defensemen. Oshie has gotten Selke votes a few years. He's gotten 25 goals in three of the last four years, with a high of 34. He replaces most of the good stuff Laine brings, but he hits twice as much, and has the opposite giveaways to takeaways ratio. So, short term, Oshie is an upgrade to WPG's 2nd line from last year's Laine in terms of overall game. Laine is young and could improve, and might learn defense, but not everybody does.
