Description

Trade capitalizes on the Leafs' window to win being this season, next season, and likely the season after if the goaltending works before the numbers get difficult to manage again.

Los Angeles gets a player who would likely be better than any combination of late first rounders, but at the cost of flipping their franchise defender before his age makes his deal bad.

Keep in mind that I hold no stake in either team and probably whiffed on the value.

I'm at work and didnt want to piss around with the LTIR calculations, but having Hyman and Dermott on SOIR frees up like $800k that the Leafs would obviously use here to be cap compliant.

I highly doubt it matters when there's a new TV deal coming soon and that the cap should be close to $100M in the next 5 years.

I mean if you took $20 out of your wallet and set it on fire every week for the next 8 years it probably wouldn't dramatically affect your quality of life, but that doesn't make it a smart thing to do

**** the analogy then, this is still dumb as hell and doesn't benefit either side. Toronto gets tied to an overrated defenseman till he's like 37-38 for way too much money, while LA effectively ends up paying anywhere between 12 and 15M (10-13M for Marner + 2M retention on Doughty) for a winger who, and I'm sure this is a coincidence, only put up career numbers once he started playing on Tavares' wing.
