Description
If your gonna suck do it right. Beyond top prospects Brannstrom, Formenton and Batherson, the system is uninspiring.
Transactions
1.
OTT
  1. Gudbranson, Erik
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2021 (PIT)
PIT
  1. DeMelo, Dylan
  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2020 (OTT)
Détails additionnels:
I like DeMelo. Don't get me wrong. But if history is an indicator, DeMelo won't be back. By moving gim to the Pens, you save Rutherford a cool $3 million this year, and another $4 million next. That is worth a 1st.

Gundbranson is a downgrade yes. But he is contract certain for another year (a bid deal in Sen land). But all about that draft choice!
2.
OTT
  1. Allen, Jake
  2. Fabbri, Robby
Détails additionnels:
Binnington is the #1, so movong Allen to save some cap makes a tonne of sense for the Blues. Fabbri has shown he can out numbers up - but has definitely slide down the depth chart in St. Louis. For the Sens though, this could be an effective pick up to round out a top 9.

Allen, as I develop a theme here.... is contract certain for an additional year.
STL
  1. Anderson, Craig (2 000 000 $ retained)
3.
OTT
  1. Benning, Matthew
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2020 (EDM)
Détails additionnels:
Edmonton is actually dealing from a posution of strength when you look at the system as a whole. In Pageau, they get a legit 3rd line centre.

Benning I believe has potential. Young enough and contract control moving forward, he starts to fill out a defense longer term.
EDM
  1. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel (1 550 000 $ retained)

I agree with this, keep cashing in UFA's and taking smallish short term cap dumps for picks/prospects.

You may agree, but if Melnyk ever saw this he would blow a nut at the thought lol

Edmonton just hired Sheahan to be the 3C, and Benning is their 2RD this year.

And Pageau is an upgrade on Sheahan, unless I am missing something?

I certainly am not underestimating Benning, but you sure are overestimating Sheahan.

I stand by the deal citing Edmonton's organizational depth on the blueline.

Sorry, not going to happen until next summer. Tippett is counting on Benning in the top-4 this year. Sure there is a depth of prospects, but none of them are proven and you don't go into the season expecting young guys to jump into the top-4 seamlessly.

Also, Pageau isn't worth a top-4 defender PLUS a pick - he's a rental.

With the number of contacts coming off the books, I would say he is a resign. 40 points from a 3rd line centre is something I do not see anywhere in the system.

Lastly.... if Kadri (last year a 3rd line centre), can land Barrie with salary retained and Kerfoot...... well, I don't think I am that far off base with the market valuation.

If you actually believe that, then you know absolutely nothing about the Senators' prospect pool. The system is rated one of the best in the NHL. Brown, Thompson, Bernard-Docker, Norris, Davidsson are all top tier prospects, and there is a lot more quality.

Demelo won't fetch a 1st either.

It's rated 12th, actually.

If all you care about is Pronman. HockeyNews has them at 6, Hockey Writers has them at 5. Elite prospects has them at 9. And most of them have White, Tkatchuk, Wolanin and Jaros as "graduated"...

And that's why it's uninspiring. The best of the best are playing ?
