Description
A prospect with a lot of upside...but risky to shuffle the defensive deck chairs.

He's a goner from the org today 8/15 if they don't sign him off the reserve list. The reason he wants to sign elsewhere is he does not see a clear path to the NHL.

He's definitely a high prospect. So why not deal Djoos, who never fully recovered from his awful injury...let Priskie win a 6th or 7th d-man role (you can always scratch Gudas). If it doesn't work out demote him and bring up Lewington.

OR...

trade Priskie's rights today...to get something.

OR...

Get absolutely nothing and he walks.

Priskie wants Carolina supposedly, due to the coaching staff and their ability to turn out tanted D men, any trade would have to be with Carolina for his right I'd imagine no?

I wish he was down to wait a season. Gudas is probably gone next season leaving open a 3RHD spot. Would be perfect for him. He'll probably end up with one of the FLA teams.

100% correct. It has been long rumored that the Caps were seeking a compensatory pick for his rights...maybe CAR played hardball and will now get him for nothing. Poop on WSH for mismanaging the prospect and good on CAR for playing the game well.

Good luck to Chase I think he has NHL caliber skills.

Extremely correct...I was just highlighting that WAS an option a couple months ago when rumors arose. He is a goner now...

Would love to see the Canes make a move for him. I did see some rumors about it months ago, but nothing since. Origionally TvR was suppose to be out for awhile but he might be back for season start, so idk if the Canes are willing anymore, but I like to see it done nonetheless .

I don't think it's "mismanagement" of a prospect. This just happens sometimes with college free agents. The Caps have a ton of D-prospects in the system right now, and they're in win-now mode with Ovie/Nicky/Holtby/Oshie all getting older. It was just unfortunate (for the Caps) that Priskie decided to stay four years at Quinnipiac. And Priskie said in the spring that he would not sign with the Caps, so why would Carolina or any team trade a pick when you know you can get him for free after tonight? Priskie might be a solid prospect, but he is not game-breaking NHL talent. The best the Caps could've hoped for is maybe a 5th or 6th rounder, which are close to worthless anyway.

Carolina has, like, five first round pick defensemen, and he reportedly sees an easier path to make their team than a Washington blue-line that will lose Gudas due to cap space next summer, and probably somebody else?

This reminds me of the time Shumakov wasn't first call up from Hershey last fall, after playing just about three North American games, and decided to stop coming to practice. At a certain point, professional sports really do require some work ethic and determination. Guentzel didn't have any path to make the Penguins, so he went to WBS and scored more than a point a game, every time they gave him a sweater, and, hey, what do you know, he gets to play with Sid, now.

Carolina has a ton of good defensemen ahead of Priskie. The Caps are one injury away from having a spot for whichever defenseman plays best at camp or in the AHL, just like every other team. If he has family in the technology triangle, or something, sure, go and be free, but if the Caps get a big offer for Djoos or Gudas, yeah, they'll have a spot open up this year. If Priskie outplays Alexeyev and Johansen in camp, he can earn it.

Is this already over? Or is there time to deal Priskie's rights, plus Stephenson or Boyd, to a team with a hole on its blue line, and try to get back a forward prospect who can develop this year in Hershey at no cap hit?

I thought of SJ, and posted an offer for Chmelevsky, a similarly meteoric 6th round pick without the same baggage of demanding to be played in the NHL right away. https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1387740

Your right. He might have a better shot here than in Carolina. I don't like when prospects do this (although it's their right). I hope he fails miserably now.

I just wish there was some sort of compensation for it. Like at least a team should have to give us their 6th round pick, the round we selected him.

Why do college players get this special right while others don't? It seems the only teams that benefit from drafting college players is the big city or nice weather teams. I don't think it's right.

I don't know why they get this treatment. It's the deal they struck with the NHLPA and NHL I guess.

It's not just college players. Any draft pick unsigned after a certain number of years. College players just seem to hit against it more often, I think because teams wait to sign them, and then by the time they're out of college, a distant memory of getting drafted four or five years ago isn't nearly enough of an emotional memory to pass up on free agency and a shortcut to glory.
