So Marner is worth more than Laine, but if I were a gambling man, I would bet that by the time they retire Laine will have the more impressive career.
Until December 1st of 2018, Laine had a much better career. He looked like a generational goal scorer. Not quite Ovechkin, but whatever is just below it. The production he had as a teenager was generational. Then he hit a ****ing wall. And in a "what have you done for me lately" league, Marner's value went up, and Laine's value went down. So now, Marner is worth more.
Also, even though I would bet that Laine has the better career, I wouldn't do the above trade as a Leafs fan for the value reason above, and because I think Marner fits the Leafs way better. The Leafs already have two top goal scorers in their top two lines. I think Marner as more of a set up man fits better on either Tavares or Matthews wings.
