Islanders don’t want to give 4 1st rd picks for him. Dubas will continue to play this game of chicken with marner (just like he did with nylander and eventually gave in to his commands) and he’ll get what he wants because the leafs are a win now team and can’t afford to have him sit out for long.
I love so much how so many people on here think Nylander won. He didn't, he gets paid less than Hayes for crying out loud. After this upcoming season, he's going to be looked at as the best contract in TO. And then all these people who have been ragging on him will have nothing to say. Its going to be glorious.
As for Marner, Dubas I think has him in a perfect spot. His agent is not good at his job and loves his own ego more than reality. He lost with AA in Detroit and Anderson in Columbus and he's going to lose with Marner. Why? Because none of the other guys are likely to hold out so they'll sign before training camp. When they sign, that sets the market and if that comes in under what Marner is demanding, which it almost certainly will, then what can Ferris do? Go back and accept the offers already on the table? Sure, but if I am Dubas, I'd be saying "that was the offers prior to these two guys signing, the offers now now lower, you shouldn't have played chicken." Is he then going to look for offer sheets? Or sign a fair deal?
Ferris bought into the hype of the offer sheet and expected he'd be able to dictate the price Marner commands, it didn't play out and now its just a stand and wait until someone moves. Dubas can wait, his team is stacked and he doesn't need to get bullied. Marner should know he has until the start of the season and then its either sign a price the Leafs can afford or sit for the entire year. Dubas has the power.
