I actually don’t hate it. I’d want that pick to be a guaranteed 2020 2nd though

Thank you for being reasonable unlike the others. I thought about a guaranteed 2nd but then I think it' an over payment. Kylington is NHL ready and strong 2nd pair potential (just not on the flames). and Emilio Pettersen is one of the Flames highest potential prospects. I think if its a guaranteed 2nd Pettersen would have to be removed from the trade since there is always a chance Schenn just walks

Tyler Johnson would veto this trade. He'd make less because of taxes, be in a worse climate, on a team that likely isn't as good.

There are so many things wrong in this statement.
1. TyJo is from 1 hour south of Calgary.
2 TyJo is close with Calgarys head coach.
3. Alberta has the lowest provincial tax in Canada (5%)
4. He would ve paid in USD in Canada essentially netting him 30% on home games (mind you this is true as long as the CAD is .76 to USD)
5. Calgary came 2nd in the league last year and will certainly mKe the playoffs again this year, high chance of leading the division too.

The thing is, Frolik doesn’t have much value to the Blues. I get that it’s for cap room, but Schenn has a ton of value right now and the Blues don’t have to trade him. If the Blues retain and take back a cap-hit they should be able to get a ton of value. I made another trade last week which was Schenn (retained,) Fabbri, 4th for Bennett, Pettersson, 2nd, and the Stone contract

Edit: oh wait, you commented on that

In his income bracket, Alberta income tax would be 15%. His total tax would be 48% in Alberta. In the US it's 37%. It would cost Tyler Johnson UP TO 550K of his own money per year to play in Calgary, 2.75M in total. If we adjust this for residency on a 50/50 basis, it's 275k per season and 1.375M per season assuming he had no state/provincial tax on the road, which isn't realistic.

Also, what you gain in Canadian dollar conversion, you lose in cost of living. 30% more dollars, 30% more expensive to live.

Tyler Johnson is from Spokane Washington, and grew up playing in Coeur d'Alene. Over 7 hours south of Calgary. You are also assuming he wants anything to do with playing in a high pressure Canadian market.

Tyler Johnson played for Bill Peters for a single season as a 17 year old. Given how far he played down the lineup in his 17yo rookie WHL season, maybe we let Tyler say if he and Bill are close.

Tampa finished first

I'm a Flames fan, but it's not a realistic expectation.

I do see two positives about Frolik. First would be having him and Sunny on a penalty kill would be sweet. Defensively, he's better than Fabbri, although Fabbri admittedly may have a higher offensive upside (assuming his knee allows him to get back to form).

I don't see the trade as terrible but also not as good as Schenn should bring. I'm not high of Petterson at this point. He strikes me as a boom or bust guy. I'd rather have someone more sure than him for a top two centerman. I'd counter Frolik, Kylington, and Dube if I were offered the above deal. I'd rather have a top six LWer, but the Flames don't have one I'd want unless Bennett can play there.

Unfortunately trading both Kylington and Dube for a maybe rental is a bit much. Both have really high upside so the return would have to be more than just Schenn

I understand completely, but knowing that is why I did not include a draft pick with my proposal. If the Flames would do Kylington, Bennett and a 2020 1st, I'd do Schenn and a 2020 2nd all day.

That darn cap seems to bite most teams in the rear, doesn't it? The Blues will be in for a rude awakening after signing Pietrangelo to a big contract and then having to pay Thomas and Dunn what they deserve in two years.

Well you do get steen bozaks and Allens contracts coming off the books then + the cap raise.

True. Bozak's money goes straight to Thomas for sure. Steen and Allen money will partially be eaten up by Dunn, Kyrou (possibly), and Schwartz. It'll be a tight squeeze. Personally, I'd look to move Petro to Toronto since it helps both teams, but it's hard to give up a top defenseman.

Unless the return is like Nylander or better I don't really see a deal there. Blues also don't really have a lot of young RD that are ready to move into the top 4 to replace him

This is very true, but the Blues almost certainly would want Liljegren back in the return for Petro.
