I'd have to agree. Ryan O'Rielly> Lucas Johansen (who) and someone whose name is literally pilon.

St. Louis traded up two places to get Thompson, whose main value to them was being part of the package they traded for O’Reilly, but before he broke out this season, it looked like Thompson wasn’t going to amount to much, and the O’Reilly trade seemed like one of the most lopsided trades ever. If St. Louis had ended up with Johansen instead, I wonder if Buffalo would have taken the deal with Johansen instead of Thompson. Thompson had played some NHL games before the O’Reilly trade, but at that time they were both just prospects.

The other two players Buffalo got in that trade scored a total of 8 goals for Buffalo and went back to Europe, and to add insult to injury, because the Blues won the cup that year, the first-rounder Buffalo got pushed to the end of the round. (He’s still in college, so I guess he could still amount to something.) For a while it looked like the best player they were going to get out of it was Colin Miller, whom they acquired with the second-round pick.

How does this change the ROR trade though?

Obviously the Blues win the cup, but it's arguable Tage is better than O'Reilly

First of all, it doesn't change the ROR trade, I'm just showing that STL used Thompson to get O'Rielly, while Washington got next to nothing out of this deal.

Second of all, even if Thompson becomes a player on a similar calibre to O'Rielly (which is looking in the realms of possibility based on the season he's having), St Loius still wins this deal. You could argue that it is becoming an example of "both teams win" but STL absolutly won that trade because O'Rielly won the Conn Smythe (by the way, I'm not saying that you were saying STL lost this trade, I'm just pointing this out).
