They did unfortunately. Either way it means the worst case scenario is a 1 year deal for a statistically *slightly* better dman at 200k cheaper.

Leafs could also flip Ceci to a team with cap space & possibly get a pick as well

Only if Marner signs an 1 year deal for what ever is left over, than the Leafs let Ceci go into UFA along with Muzzin and have that 8 + million to try to get Marner long term.

Trade one RHD for another RHD and trade him for nothing, when the team's biggest weakness is RHD. Good plan.

The Zaitsev trade was supposed to be about cap space. I don't know how Dubas plans to create that with Ceci coming back, but we'll see. Zaitsev can be replaced by any 700k player and we won't see a difference.
