The Oilers probably don’t do this. What we lose in defence on a fairly weak blue line is not worth what we gain in Marner. If he was looking for around 9-10M maybe some deal could be made but he wants 11+ and unless the oilers move Lucic, Sekera and Russell no way we can afford him.
I agree, and add:
1. Any possible Nugent-Hopkins trade is most likely to happen next summer; and only if Holland gets a fantastic offer, or if Nugent-Hopkins does not want to extend with the Oilers under acceptable terms.
2. If you look at the net benefit of the proposed trade, the value of Edmonton adding Marner is negligible. Draisaitl would have to drop from McDavid's wing to the 2C, and he will definitely experience a drop in offensive production. That drop in production, and the loss of Nugent-Hopkins 50-70 points may just negate Marner's contribution, even if he manages another 90-point season.
3. Holland will not trade away two of the three defense he has who are capable of playing top-4 minutes.
3. Holland has a pile of strong defensive prospects, and at least three (and very likely four) will push for NHL roster spots this fall. Dermott is not the kind of prospect Holland is likely to ask for. He is more likely to look for forwards.
4. Edmonton's available cap space makes this trade difficult to rationalize. Zaitsev is a bigger cap hit than Larsson and it seems Marner's next contract will eclipse the cumulative salaries of Nugent-Hopkins, Nurse, and Puljujarvi; and then there's salaries for Brown and Dermott. It is even possible that Marner's next contract will exceed the combined cost of Nugent-Hopkin's current contract, and Nurses next contract. That makes zero sense for Holland.
5. Paying Puljujarvi $2,000,000 x 3 is not a good idea at all.
