Leafs could go higher. All it would cost them is a depth player

Now we are revenge offersheeting offersheets that will never be offersheeted... sorry had to throw that last one in there.

Mowing that Toronto will match any reasonable contract I don’t see anyone willing to waste their time with marner. Four firsts gone and an overpaid marner added... don’t see the benefit with so much talent in ufa and trade available.

They can't do that either. Since the 1st round pick that is involved in the Marleau trade is conditional, they can't use either the 2020 or 2021 1st round picks.

Yeah they would. I think it would just be a conditional 1st in either 2020 or 2021, then a first in 2022, 2023 and 2024

Right. I can't see a team throwing out 10.5 aav plus and 4 firsts either. But if they do then I hope the leafs take those picks and run.

I used to have some concern on a less than 10.5 OS which would force the leafs to match. But now that they have the cap space to do that, and other teams would have to know that the leafs match, then why even throw out an OS? There isn't alot of benefit for an opposing GM.. it just drives up the rfa market and p*sses everyone off with nothing positive coming back except maybe knowing they threw a wrench at the leafs.

So, even if Ferris/Paul are heading on an OS tour, I could very well seeing them coming back empty handed. And then what? Is that $10M 8 yr deal still on the table? Does Marner sit? Does he get traded? Or, does this silly game of chicken come to end and he becomes the 2nd highest paid winger in the league? It's really kinda moving into bizarro land..

That doesn't work in a offer sheet. You could propose a trade to Colorado offering up 4 firsts including a conditional 2020/2021 1st that is the opposite condition of the Marleau trade, but they'd obviously be allowed to decline. However, Toronto is currently ineligible to offer an offer sheet this summer that would result in them giving up a 1st round pick.

The CBA says as I stated above says "Clubs owing one (1) draft selection must have it available in the next draft. ". So. The offersheet originally would be 2020 2021 2022 and 2023. If the 2020 pick is unavailable it would be 2021 2022 2023 and 2024

What about that sentence makes you think that you can defer the draft pick until a later year? In order to offer and "owe" a draft selection, the team "must have it available in the next draft." The next draft is in 2020. The Leafs do not own their 2020 1st round pick. Therefore they can't make an offer sheet this summer that would require they give up a 1st round pick. It's not ambiguous at all.

It says if they don't have the pick, it just goes to the next draft. CapFriendly let me do it so I'm probably right
