Description
I’m hoping Boston wins the Stanley Cup! If they do, I think management will keep most of the team together. Jack Studnicka will get his chance to shine in Boston. A few trades will need to be made at the NHL Draft though. Boston has a bunch of RFAs to sign and it’s going to cost a decent amount. First off, Boston should trade Kevan Miller. I’m a big fan of Miller but there’s no more room for him on the roster. While Miller was out injured for most of the 2018-19 season, defenseman Connor Clifton has proven that he can play at the NHL level. Clifton has been a solid addition to this Bruins team, especially during the playoffs. Secondly, trading David Backes is a must. I like Backes a lot because he seems like a great leader but it’s a business and that contract is one of the worst in the league. I’m sure the Coyotes will take on his contract because they’re known for taking on other terrible contracts. The Bruins would have to add a sweetener, which would end up being Peter Cehlarik's rights. Cehlarik has struggled at the NHL level for Boston and he had a rough season in the AHL with Providence. Arizona could give Cehlarik a chance to shine in their top-six, while Backes motivates the young guns, or gets bought out. Lastly, Boston will trade Danton Heinen and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson's rights. Heinen is another RFA that’s going to get decently paid. In my opinion, Heinen does not fit the Bruins style of play. He’s a good defensive forward that has top-6 forward potential but I don’t think he will ever become more than a third liner for Boston. Forsbacka Karlsson is another player that hasn’t progressed very well. He was called up for some time during the 2018-19 season but he didn’t seize his opportunity. In 28 games for Boston, JFK picked up just 9 points as the third center. Points aren’t everything but he didn’t do many other things either. JFK is a two-way forward that can make great passes and jump into the rush. Boston is stacked with center depth. He has top-nine potential but I think you’ll be seeing him play on another team during the 2020-21 season. JFK is committed to the SHL for the 2019-20 season. Boston acquires the 26th overall pick from Calgary in exchange for those two players and drafts Raphaël Lavoie. Lavoie is a center/winger that can skate very well for his size. He is a sniper that can also be a net-front presence because of his size. Lavoie is also a great playmaker with top-notch vision. His defensive game has gotten better over the years but he’s still not a two-way forward. Lavoie will most likely be a winger at the NHL level but he can play any forward position. Bergeron and Krejci aren’t getting any younger so moving up in the draft for Lavoie would be a great choice, despite the criticism that he receives. The Bruins also have their own first round pick, which will end up being somewhere between 28th-31st overall. Lavoie could possibly fall to the Bruins later in the first round but there’s no need to chance waiting that long, which is why I have them trading up. The Bruins should draft Samuel Poulin from the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the QMJHL. He’s a rugged left winger that can score and is willing to drive the net with the puck. His skating needs work but everything else is very good. He’d be a great pick. Boston could also look into drafting Tobias Björnfot from Djurgårdens IF J20 of the SuperElit league in Sweden. He’s a great skating two-way defenseman that has very good offensive awareness. The Bruins may have a bunch of defensive prospects already but you can never have enough. These three are my favorite prospects in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Why would anyone take the Backes contract? Cehlarik isn't enough for the Yotes to take Backes IMO.

NJ doesn't really need Miller. Why give up 2 picks for him?

Also, why are you trading Heinen? I didn't read the whole explanation and you said he doesn't fit the Bruins. How?

Well, we've got a few issues here.
1. Backes. I think he'll likely be moved. I think there's a chance he LTIRetires due to concussion issues. I think there's a chance he straight up retires. If he can't play for a stanley cup contender, what's the point...well, the $5MM left on his contract I suppose, but LTIR works there. There's precedent for the concussion issues. That said, let's say he's traded. Peter Cehlarik isn't the sweetener to get someone to take on $5MM in salary, and two years at 6 million in cap. That's a joke.
2. Heinen. No, they're not trading him. He's a fantastic young player and does all the little things right. He has a 47 point season under his belt, they're not just gassing him for no reason.
3. Mojo will get sooooooooooooooooooo much more than that. if he signs for 3x4.5 I think that would be a miracle.
3. Offering McAvoy that is a good way to damage relations between the player and the organization. That offer is an absolute joke.
4. Bjork stinks.
5. Why is a cup contender hanging onto 7 million in cap space?

If you watch any Bruins games, Heinen is terrible. Points aren’t everything. Secondly, McAvoy isn’t getting much more than that. No way he gets 8+. Maybe 7-7.5? Plus, Bjork isn’t that bad.

I watch every bruins game. You're right, points aren't everything and that's why Heinen is awesome. He definitely went through a sophomore slump this year, but he's got excellent instincts, is fantastic when it comes to winning puck battles, and his defensive positioning is flat out elite. He's an awesome player. McAvoy will get a bridge. He isn't signing for term unless he gets 8.5+. It has been reported that he isn't interested in a long term deal.

1. Would love to hear your analysis on why Heinen is terrible
2. McAvoy is looking for a bridge deal
3. Studnicka starts next year in the AHL
4. Boston is not stacked with Center depth. Bergy/Krejci have 3-5 years tops, Coyle is a UFA after next season and trading JFK leaves you with Frederic/Studnicka as your only real quality center prospects
5. Mojo is getting way more than that. Its already rumored that WSH/NJ want to bring him back and with this playoff performance, other teams will be calling.
6. While I agree Clifton has made Miller expandable, you can never have enough NHL caliber d-men.

Charlie Coyle has been getting a ton of praise and rightly so, but you are very wrong about Heinen.

Example 1 - three great plays: Catching flip pass and lifting Werenski's stick 2) staying on side 3) That pass was butter.

Example 2 - Look who picks up the lose puck, carries it in, Leaves perfectly for Johansson to distibbute.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_S4GAtseBA

Example 3: WHAT A PLAY?!?!?!? One on three, He delays, Takes the hit to leave puck with Chara.

He makes plays like this all the time. He is 2nd on team in +/- for forwards.

He always makes the right play. Always. His execution is not always perfect, but he does not get enough credit for how good he is.

That’s a few good plays, which he deserves credit for. He’s very inconsistent most games.

A good litmus test for Bruins fans is if they actually understand the value Heinen has as a good young smart third liner. People who want to dump him are nuts.

I find it shocking that you're a bruins fan and can't appreciate Heinen. He does the little things correctly for a young player. He still has great upside..

I wouldn't say the Bruins are stacked with center prospects..do they have a lot of quality young centers? Absolutely. But how many of them can be a future top 6 center? I would say only Studnicka (potentially). However I think Studnicka will get an immediate opportunity on Right Wing. I don't think he'll be on the team next season full time, but he'll get his chances. Frederic to me looks like a power third line center. JFK looks like a 200ft versatile third line center, similar to Riley Nash with the Bruins. Curtis Hall can be a solid powerforward bottom 6 center. I think at the draft they should aim for a right handed center/winger. Tomasino would be ideal for me but I like Bobby Brink as well

He makes plays like these on every shift. He never fails to get the puck out, ever. Offensively he can be inconsistent, but it seems to be all confidence with him. His opportunities are pretty consistent, his execution varies, but no more than any other 2nd year player. He is more consistent than both Pastrnak and Debrusk - you know the other 23y old (or younger) forwards... Not more skilled - I think we can agree, so the Debrusk/Heinen numbers should show you something...

Last two seasons combined:
Debrusk - 138gp 43g 42a 85pts +15- 15:15 TOI
Heinen - 154gp 27g 54a 81pts + 23 - 14:30 TOI

Palat is a good comparison - not as physical, but better when it comes to give/take aways.
