While the retained salary is not a problem this year. Next year when Mantha, Athanasiou, Bertuzzi, Svechnikov, De La Rose, Bowey, #1 d-man (Green's spot), #3 d-man (Daley's spot), #5 d-man (Erricsson's spot) and #1 goalie (Howard's spot) all come due for new contracts those retained salaries become a huge problem. The trades are just not practical.

First off neither Perry nor Lucic would waive their NMC for Detroit? So this is all pretty moot any ways.

And the sky reflects blue. What does that have to do with a modest cap crunch next off-season? Is Howard going to play for free or something? If not then the point of needing to pay a #1 goalie is still valid.

While not ideal bringing Howard back for another season does give Detroit's goalie prospects an extra time to see if any will pan out.
