Leafs would rather Have Marleau for one year than Phaneuf for two. Kessel, no thanks. Pateryn isn't good but he a RHD which propels to him to a Norris candicate when traded to the Leafs.

For Kings to be interested in taking Marleau, they need a combination of picks/prospects/young fast players coming back and a bad contracts going the other way. A one for one swap of bad contracts in no where close enough to get Marleau moved.

No. At most one of those sweeteners, and even then -- similarly problematic players on similarly problematic contracts get trade one-for-one all the time.




It is definitely true that Marner's agent has talked to multiple sources. But that doesn't change what's a sane amount to pay him or the Leafs' leverage one whit.

I will flat out bet you right now. But first I'll give you a minute to look over the stats and facts because exactly 100% of them say Marner is not worth 11 mil. It's crazy business when a couple media guys can spew some BS out of their ass and an entire fan base soaks it up

He's also twice the player Marner is. Plays center. Scores twice as many goals. Drives a line. Is miles better defensively. All doing this with 3rd line players

Who was saying Matthews wouldn't be making more than anyone but McDavid? He's the best goal-scoring center of his generation, and to find a comparable at that position you'd probably have to go back to... Sakic? Of course his contract was going to look something like that.

Marner, meanwhile, is great. Really great. Like a Kane or Kucherov or Gaudreau or Draisaitl. Great winger. But not exactly a generational talent at anything in particular.

Problematic contracts are traded all the time when it is mutually beneficial for both teams. In this case, there is zero incentive for LA to make this trade. The only value Marleau brings to the Kings is the additional assets that must be included in order to move him. And taking back Phaneuf alone is not worth anything.

The pessimists were thinking about a Tavares like contract, but for 8 years.
