Feels like deja vu with the whole offer sheet threat, Nylander wanted 8.5 every ACGM at that time had him signing an offer sheet and yet no offer sheet came and the kid signed at 6.9 so Marners wants 11 and gets 9/9.5 x 6 tops
It's a false equivalency to compare Nylander's RFA situation to Marner's. Nylander had back to back 61 point seasons, didn't show any real growth, and disappeared in both playoff rounds he was a part of. Sure, some teams might have wanted him but probably not to the extent to offer sheet him. Also - the Leafs had a ton of cap space in the 2018/2019 season, so an offer sheet would not have jammed them up as much as it would going into the 2019/2020 season.
Marner will get at least 10 million AAV on a long-term deal (i.e., at least 6 years), whether it's from the Leafs or from an offer sheet. His point total, even strength numbers, all-situation playing ability (PP, PK, even strength) all make him very desirable on the open market. Sure - Marner's camp might be bluffing when they said they'll be visiting teams starting June 26th when the RFA window opens, but it's a negotiation tactic and Darren Ferris will use every tool he can to get his client the best deal possible. And enough with the "Marner only got 93 points cause he played with JT" argument. JT never scored 40 plus goals until he played with Marner, so by your logic JT would have never been an elite goal scorer if it wasn't for Marner. They complemented each other very well, and up until this year Marner had not played with anyone that shared his level of hockey sense. For his two first years he was playing with Bozak and Kadri, and even on the 4th line for some of the 2017-2018 season.
People act like Marner getting over 10 million AAV on a long term deal is crazy. Signing Matthews to his deal at 11.6 AAV for only 5 years could be viewed as equally crazy; is Matthews seriously the second best player in the league behind McDavid? Some might say yes, some no, but the fact is he's being paid the second highest in the league AAV wise. More importantly, Dubas has now set the precedent for their organization that they will pay their highly touted RFAs for their projected worth and not their current value. So if Marner signs for 10.5 AAV at 6 years, is that really overpaying him if he consistently produces 85-100 points? Probably not - it would be considered market appropriate value given the output.
