Islander fans seem to be obsessed with a) Marner offersheets as revenge for signing Tavares and b) trading Nick Leddy. He's a pretty solid top-4 Dman, or am I missing something?

A key point of these moves is trading leddy for futures, which will help in the eventual Cap dump of Ladd to Seattle. with both Greiss and ladd coming off the books signing Barzal shouldn't be an issue. Bailey is also expendable if either of Wahlstrom or Bellows pan out.

isles will have to pay Toews, Pulock, Barzal, which in my estimate is about 18 million dollars, half of that being Barzal. getting rid of Ladd's contract gives them about 20 million in cap space next season, trading bailey gives them another 5 if its for straight futures

A) has nothing to do with revenge. Marner is one of the few players actually worth giving up 4 first round picks for and is IMO the best player on the Leafs. Isles need an elite winger, Marner is the best one available.

B) Leddy is a very good top 4 puck moving defenseman on the left side... but Toews is better. Leddy is too valuable a trade asset to keep (fast top 4 puck moving D w 3 yrs of term on a pretty good contract) with guys like Toews and Aho Knocking on the door

cap dumping to Seattle is going to be tough. What do you have to give up? You won't have any first round picks because you gave them away for Marner. If you give away more draft picks than that, you kill your farm system and have nothing to trade away to update your roster afterwards.

Do you mean Rantanen?

Because you can't offer sheet a player who doesn't play for Toronto, that's the rules.

if he does mean rantanen, it's because COL is going to have absolutely no problem matching anything.

there are two players that will get offer sheets if it gets that far, Point and Marner

How do you trade them a 2020 draft pick when the expansion draft is happening in 2021?

The Avalanche aren't in cap hell like the Leafs.

If we're going to get someone from the Leafs, I'd rather trade for Nylander or Kapanen. Marner is just too rich and would end up putting us in cap hell just like the Leafs.

I'd rather offer sheet point, then marner. Centers carry much more value

I agree with that point on positional value, but the isles have already committed to Nelson as the 2C and adding Point as a 10.5 million dollar center Nelson making 6, and Barzal making 9-10 thats too much money allocated there.

Too many contracts over 1mil, it makes it difficult to sign your big guns.

Arthur Staple made a passing comment that Nick Leddy could potentially be traded, and the fan base ran away with it. The fact is, if Leddy is expendable because Toews is better than him, you better convince Barry Trotz....

Nick Leddy Avg TOI 21:33 (2nd most on entire team)
Devon Toews Avg TOI 17:53 (7th among Isles D)

playoffs:

Devon Toews 19:09 A/TOI 4th on the team, PP TOI 26:28 4th on the team

I don't read stuff from the athletic but I do know Dave Pagnotta believes he's getting moved and has said so numerous times, and he generally doesn't just toss crap up in the air and see if it sticks.

All that tells me is that Leddy was still being relied on even more heavily 5V5 despite his D partner going down with injury.

his avg toi 5v5 in the playoffs went down by 45 seconds as compared to regular season. we can sit here and talk about TOI, but it's pointless. TOI has little to do with a player's expendability . Just because a player gets heavy usage, doesn't mean they aren't expendable. by your logic, Muzzin (21:30 A/TOI when traded) would have never been traded (for cap space and needed futures), Hamonic (20:42 A/TOI When traded) never would have been traded (made room for Pulock), or Dougie Hamilton (21:20 A/TOI when traded) would have never been traded by BOS. I can go on and on of trades of highly utilized players who get traded either out of necessity or there are cheaper better younger options behind them.

Well I guess we'll just have to see what happens with mr Leddy this offseason then.
