Bruins Offseason

Description
I think this is a more realistic look at our offseason. Probably won't be making too many big moves other then locking down our RFAs. Wish we had more money to bring back Jojo but I doubt we can fit him without shipping off a bigger contract like Backes (unlikely). Also the John Moore signing ain't looking too hot right now.

With how much young players are making out of their ELC's I highly doubt you are going to get McAvoy for 8 years at that cost. My guess is he signs over 6 for 3 years.

Heinen stinks .. waive or trade .. JFK also so so .. Bruins need ONE young guy to play that 2nd line sniper role and Johannson also will be gone .. bigger issue to me is 1 more D .. Chara is hanging on by thread and Krug/Grelyck are not big D guys .. that God for CARLO who maybe Team MVP .. Millar would fit the bill but always hurt .. I would look to add D and pray for ONE young guy to be Debrusk like

agree with @LoganOllivier on the term, probably not the price though. McKenzie has reported that McAvoy has indicated he's betting on himself, and isn't interested in a max term deal, preferring a bridge.

I'm guessing you haven't watched Heinen play much. He's a keeper.

I watch Bruins alot and go to 6 or so games a year and friend chat in painful hockey detail with my ex hockey friends in Boston .. Heinen stinks is consensus and it not really close. 2ND line wing has been HUGE issue all year .. should tell you something right there .. all the switching .. and why Sweeny HAD to make deadline trades.

AMAZING how Coyle and Johansson look like Malkin and Crosby this playoffs .. they have been amazing .. those 2 along with Rask and Carlo have been incredible

With the Bridge deal Matthews took, all similar players (extreme high end young players) are not going to leave much money on the table. And what I mean by that, is don't expect a PK Subban bridge deal. It'll only be 2-3 years but it's going to be well over 5 million. If you can get him for 3 at 6.5 that may be the best you can expect. I wouldn't even be suprised he wants 6 mill each for 2 seasons. I'd wager he's already worth that. In fact, if you can get McAvoy for under 9 on an 8 year deal, I'd strongly contemplate that.

first off, matthews didn't take a bridge. Secondly, can't see that much money for a group 1 RFA.

My opinion, McAvoy 3yrs. 5.75 mill., Carlo 3yrs. 3.5 mill. Johansson 5yrs. 4.25 mill. Heinen, Backes(easier said than done), Krug( has to be traded will not be able to afford him going forward) and Millar have to go.

I hear what you are saying with Matthews deal. Its definitely not the traditional type of contract. Young players and their agents understand how the landscape is changing. Just watch Spurgeon get absolutely wrecked in his next contract. Playing past your 30th birthday in the NHL is becoming increasingly rare and GM's are finally starting to understand this. So with that in mind, young players know that if they wait for their pay days till their late 20's they are going to get wrecked.

I feel bad for guys like McKinnon and Sheifele who are in the transition zone of players who signed to their late 20's at way below what they should be making and they will end up making way less than they should over their careers. When they are 28 and wanting the huge 8 year deal, their clubs just won't do it. There will be too much evidence showing they will be declining assets at the end of the contracts and their best years are already behind them.

I think because of that, you'll see bigger named young guys still getting big cap hits but its going to be shorter term. I am not even sure how many 8 year contracts will be handed out. Its too risky for both the team and the player.

I agree with that. I think that across the league the way that bridge is definied is, "is the player an RFA at the end of the deal?" yes, bridge. no, not a bridge.

I think bridge deals are also going to be lower than market value for what the player did but is a show me type deal. Its mainly for young players who look intriguing but haven't put it all together. Like Kapanen who at times looks like he'll be a 30 goal scoring sniper and sometimes looks like a 10 goal scoring 4th liner who can kill penalites. You just can't give him a 5 year 5 million dollar deal in the cap era, well you can but that's awfully risky, which is why a bridge works for him. Give him 2 years at a low rate and then you can show me what you can do. Then we'll talk. Although I bet those type of deals are going to change as well. I bet you these guys are going to try to take 1 year deals so they can maximize their earnings in the case they have a big year.

K. Maybe the kid isn’t ready to play top six minutes yet, but he’s still a keeper. Half point per game, and is awesome defensively. Can’t imagine what player you’ve been watching and what consensus you’re talking about

Ok. But my 6 year old can have 34 points a year playing wing with Bergeron and Krejci as centers on 1st and 2 line where most of his point came from .. and to me he isnt strong on puck like others .. tries hard defensively but lacks the DeBrusk toughness. He replaceable 3rd liner to me and as RFA . See ya .. go Bs!!!!!

Heinen has not played with Bergeron or Krejci for any amount of time. He has been on the third line the past two seasons. Except for a short stint this season when he was playing with Bergeron and Marchand and proved that he was fully capable of playing in the top 6 defensively and offensively.

You also clearly have not watched Boston in the playoffs at all. McAvoy, Carlo, Grezelcyk and Krug have all stepped up their game defensively and offensively. Clifton has shown he is a solid third pairing guy their defense is clearly not missing something.

YES .. Heinen done nothing .. it all Coyle Johannson and the rest.. and YES .. most of his paltry 34 points this year came playing on 1st/2nd .. do your research morons .. why you defending a clearly marginal player is baffling.. too much good with others happening .. watch him tonight get beat .. freakin old man Backes on 2nd line because he got balls and better than Heinen .. Heinen is borderline healthy scratch when Acciari comes back .

@boltlover1. Heinen is better than he is given credit for. He had a down 2nd year, but plays a responsible game. Yes he doesn't have that game breaking flash of skill everyone wants, but he has a good shot, good hands, and was a +13 playing during the season (+10 already in the playoffs) with a revolving door of centers for most of the year and the one short stint with the first line. He is a good role player and I could see him hitting the 40-50 point mark next year with Coyle.

Also I don't get why we need more d-men as you mentioned earlier in the thread. We are already scratching John Moore and Kampfer now, and yes Chara is about done and Kampfer is gone next year but we have Miller coming back, Urho V who is about ready for a full time job, and others like Lauzon who have proven they can handle it as well. 2 left handed shots that can cover Chara's spot.
