No training camp and missing a third of the season and just having terrible luck and he scored .5 ppg which is not that far behind Saad who at 26 turning 27 is not likely to get any better. He's a solid 40-50 winger. Nylander scored 61 points in his first two seasons, that shows a hell of a lot more promise.
Look man, you can't call people homers and then make a statement that is just silly. What makes it worse is that you offered to trade Saad and now are back tracking hoping to convince me it's a deal I should want. It's just ridiculous. Saad has played with amazing linemates and scored 50 points (not necessarily last season but he's played with Kane or Toews at various times). So you can't use that argument that Nylander needs Matthews, he still did score at a .5 rate and that includes a stretch of 13 games where he had 2 points to start his season. That makes the rest of his shortened season a lot closer to what is real. And you know this, which is why you want him and it's transparent and I am tired of it.
I'm not interested in convincing you of anything or back tracking. All I'm saying is any GM in this league who would give up a pretty significant asset like Saad (A- player) for former (A-) player like Nylander who crapped the bed this past season and showed he can't carry his own line but maybe it's just age would have to think hard about it...especially given the additive cap hit and contract length.
FACTUALLY SPEAKING, did Nylander prove the people right or wrong who said during the summer and subsequent holdout he shouldn't get anywhere close to what Marner was asking last summer because he's a benefactor of playing with Matthews? Do you remember all the people saying that on here saying that me included? Factually, what happened?
Saad played on the 3rd line last season with Anisimov. Nylander played on the 3rd line with Kadri (better then Anisimov) and crapped the bed and Nylander is SUPPOSED TO BE a playmaker. Saad is a two way physical winger first and foremost not a scorer yet he out scored Nylander. It's not like you can use the excuse Nylander wasn't in game shape after 52 games. He played 2/3rds of a season almost. If he only played 10 or 20 games I'd value that argument somewhat even though athletes making $10M a year should be close to game shape year round and most are.
The narrative around age isn't a valid one at a player who's 26 going on 27. Kane who's 30 and Toews who's 31 both had their best seasons yet. Stone who's about to turn 27, most would agree he hasn't peaked yet. Whether saad has or hasn't is hard to say, but I don't believe the 26 or 27 year old narrative people throw around like it's a rule is far from it. Some players peak at 25 and some peak at 30 and some have a bad year and throws off the projection of when they will peak.
Bottom line, you have a pretty proven consistent 27 year old 2 way winger and you know what your getting for $6M. Alternative to that you have a 23 year winger that put up 61 points next to Matthews for 2 years and then crapped the bed after holding out and losing Matthews on his line. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has the same faith in Nylander's ability that they did a year ago this time.
Look man, Saad had a crap year last season....these things happen and sometimes players bounce back and sometimes they don't but it's a risk when a player is coming off of a dramatic drop in production and you have to look deeper as to why. As such, trying to play the "he only played 52 games and wasn't in training camp" narrative pales in comparison to "he doesn't play with Matthews anymore".
