Why not? I think it's a very competitive offer. LA gets a solid replacement in his prime who can eat 20 mins/night no problem. They have a seriously problem up front with just older Kopitar, Kovalchuk, brown etc. They have a serious dearth of prime age top 6 forwards. kane and Labanc add two 50-60 pt players, in their primes at reasonable cap hits. I don't see LA getting a whole lot more than a middle pair Dman, and two top 6 forwards in their primes for doughty.

Even if LA were to accept, Kane would likely block the trade with his NTC. He's happy in SJ, and its taken a while for him to find a home where he feels comfortable in the locker room.

Also, if you're giving Pavelski 5 years, I think it's fair to say the cap hit will be lower, maybe 6M or 6.5M . I can see it being around 7M for 2 or 3 years though.

I see Braun having positive value @ 3.8M but i dont think you're getting a package of picks like that with Dell or Melker, who may have negative value on their current deals. I hope I'm wrong, Doug Wilson pulled off magic last season with the whole Boedker -> Hoffman -> picks deal, maybe he can do it again.

Paying 37 million to 4 dman is not the best idea, especially when only Karlsson is under 30 (and complication to protect them all in expansion draft).
Forward group is weak af, not to mention if you need to resign 4 elc after 2 years, no way they would fit under cap.

aaahhh, you bring up a great point about the draft... I completely forgot about it, but it's definitely gotta be in the plans... the 7F-3D-1G option is way better than the 8 total option for a team like the sharks.

Resign EK and protect him, burns and pickles. Then they can protect all the forwards the need to and expose a guy like Ryan on the back end or Goodie, Sorensen or the like from the forwards.

He could dump melker for a late round pick. and Dell too I think. Neither would land much more than a 5th-7th rounder, but I think there is a market for them. I also think a vet like braun can get at least a 2nd, maybe even a late 1st. Braun is a very desireable add for any team, and dillon would be too. Definitely high value for either.

As for the realism of the doughty trade, it's not. at all. I know that :-) Its just for fun...

I am a firm believer of building a winner from the net out. I also a firm believer of needing just 4 top D in the playoffs. Right now, the sharks have 3 top D. One more and they would be truly set.

They also have a very rich farm up front. Chmelevski is rocking it, 2nd in the OHL in playoff points, and was #1 star for team USA in the gold medal game. Chekhovich looked NHL ready during the preseason last year. He'll be ready this year for sure, whether he makes the team or not. We'll see what blichfeld can do as the #2 scorer in all the CHL, and Noah gregor is 3rd in WHL playoff scoring and had a very strong year. Alex true has the size to play an NHL game and really emerged this year. Gambrell hasnt quite found that spot yet, but he seems to be getting close. Even Francis Perron looked pretty good before his head injury. And, of course, every year, dougie seems to find some junior or Euro FA that steps in and makes an impact (marcus sorenson, melker karlsson, joonas donskoi, barclay goodrow, Tim Heed, lukas radil, etc etc etc... all undrafted FA signings). Its also much easier to acquire forward talent throughout the season. Looks at the players that moved at the deadline: Stone, Duchene, Dzingel, Nyqist, Hayes, Zuccarello, Coyle, hagelin... All top 9 forwards. The only top 4 D who moved near the deadline was Muzzin. All others like del zotto, lovejoy, etc ar much more depth Dmen.

As such, solidifying the D through the next 6 years allows the sharks to focus on developing their young forwards and acquiring at the deadline as needed....

Absolutely. have one or two older vets is ntoa bad thing. LA has all old guys in kopitar, carter, kovy, Brown, etc. They have zero bna fide top 6 forwards under 30. Even my roster has meier and hertl in that category.

I think the ovation last night should tell you all you need to know about resigning pavs. He is the heart and soul of the team, and you cannot let him walk. Not to mention, his style of game which is based on tipping pucks and body positioning wont decay with age at the same pace as a guy like carter whose game is based on speed.

Resigning pavs to lifetime contract is a total no brainer....

Rob Blake is not Pierre Dorion. (Even though he barely dodged a deadly bullet in the Pacioretty trade) Unlike Sens and Melnyk, the LAK are not desperately trying to get rid of Doughty, especially after Drew signed that 8 years contract with a full NMC. Besides, that package is not close to the value of Doughty. In fact, that package has less value than what Ottawa got from trading Erik Karlsson. The Sharks would have to give up more than that. It starts with at least..

- Ryan Merkley
- probably another top prospect

Id rather make your deal. Personally, I think Merkley is a likely bust. Not nearly good enough defensively: small, too irresponsible, canot handle the cycle game and makes overly offensive risky reads. He is young and may well round out, but he gets beat regularly by OHL forwards, so NHL forwards will eat him for breakfast.

So I realize that this is all a thought exercise, but the idea of Doughty playing literally in a pairing with Burns made me literally cackle like a damn hyena

That said, NO, HARDEST OF NO, to the idea of sending a loaded gun like Labanc to the goddamn KINGS of all teams - the only worse option would be to give him to the bloody Knights!
