I agree with this. Dreger has said in the past that he doesn't think Marner is interested in max term, and he's also said that the leafs really prefer not to have marner and matthews come up in the same year, so my guess is he's thinking 6 year term.

I think marner on an 8 year deal at 11m is still an overpay compared to the contracts signed last year. Can only hope we see some rfa’s sign before him to help set the market right. But if it takes 11m then you have to pay it and find a way. Hopefully we can get that knocked down a few 100k though.

voracek and giroux aren't exactly spring chickens.

That's why we have a plethora of kids like Konecny, Frost, Farabee, Lindblom, Couturier, Patrick, Ratcliffe, etc. Our forward group is going to be deep for a long time and our D looks much better than what the Leafs have or will have.

Panarin could sign in Toronto on July 1 and Marner can sit there and wait till he gets his offer sheet or Toronto trades him. They don't have to have Marner done before that. They'll probably give him a hard number and say they can't go higher than it before the draft, if he says he won't take it then shift the focus to Panarin or another big free agent and move Marner. At minimum he's bring back 4 1st round picks or high quality players. He needs to stop being so greedy. He's the poster boy for everything and has all his endorsements on the side, he's getting his money. Reports had it out there that he was getting free rent last season in a downtown condo that wasn't cheap. How much more money does he need? .. IMO, Leafs give him a hard offer around $10M, term is variable. If he says no then he's not coming back next season and he'll be the most hated ex-Leaf probably ever

There's no point in arguing with him. He thinks Matthews shoulda signed for 8 years at $8.5M and he thinks Marner deserves around the same. All that gets Toronto is a trade request but he'll argue you all day that he's right about it lol

No they don't. That's actually illegal under the league rules. It wasn't the Leafs paying for it. It was his friends dad that paid his monthly rent for being such a good Leaf. It was on the Spittin Chiclets podcast recently

But imagine sighing Panarin on July 1 for 8 years at $10M per, then letting Marner at worst walk to an offer sheet and still getting 4 unprotected 1st round picks. & most of the serious contending teams don't have cap space to take on the $11M he's demanding, so he'd either go to a second tier or low tier team, which means there's a good chance that team doesn't make playoffs for at least 2 years and those picks become lottery picks. Could potentially be multiple 1 overall picks. I'd be happy with that
