Roadmap Summer 19 - Now featuring Kaapo Kakko

Créé par: VOFS
Équipe: 2019-20 Rangers de New York
Date de création initiale: 10 avr. 2019
Publié: 10 avr. 2019
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
A plan for maximizing the opportunities available in free agency this summer without sacrificing the newly re-built farm system or future cap flexibility. This roster features Kaapo Kakko picked at #2, but if the Devils pick him at #1, just pencil in Jack Hughes.

Please note that all trades away for draft picks are made primarily for cap clearing reasons and not to maximize trade returns. If you think any return is low or high, simply substitute the return you think is more likely. If you think any player will require attaching draft assets in order to dump, feel free to attach them.

The purpose of this roster is simply to demonstrate how the Rangers can build a playoff team this offseason if they so choose. It is not meant to be a prediction of what will actually happen.

Skinner and Panarin, wow. What you really need is 2nd Center.
Perhaps trade with Hawks, 2nd (Kakko) for 3rd (Cozins or Dach either could play next year 2nd C) plus get top D maybe Mitchell and Forsling or Krys. plus a winger like like Perlini etc. maybe even ask for Anisimov to play with Panarin.
(will save money on D signings)
ChiHawk a aimé ceci.

I don't think the Rangers have dropped the idea of rebuilding because they have an additional key piece. They are still going to try rebuilding for at least another year.

Ehh, not really worried about center. I think Chytil can handle it, and even if he or Andersson or Howden can't, there's no pressure to contend right away. The young centers can learn and grow on the job while playing with awesome linemates. They'll have cap space next year and even more prospects joining the team hopefully, and in two years when Hank and Shatty come off the books they'll have another mountain of cap space to work with. No need to get it perfect right now.

What does "rebuilding" mean though? Are they going to try and tank for Lafreniere? I highly doubt it. And if they''re not going to do that, there's no reason not to add special free agents like Panarin and Skinner, the kind that are almost never available at that age.

It means getting a foundation for the team to build on.

Winnipeg is a perfect example of a well thought out, extensive, successful rebuild.

They established the majority of their top 9 + top 4 on pieces they drafted. A slow process which they only started to sign top end talents when they began to see a window open to playoff contention. The Rangers don't have the foundation completely grounded as in the team without these new assets is not going on a deep playoff run.

I get all that until the part where adding rare talent to your team somehow stop you from adding more talent. Of course it's good to build through the draft, but it's even better if you can do that while also being able to afford to jump into the free agency pool and add premium goal scorers, the thing that's hardest to find anywhere, including in the draft. The Rangers aren't giving away any high picks in this scenario, and they aren't limiting future cap flexibility.

The players need time to develop though. Even the Hurricanes only started to add after seeing that their young guys were capable. They added to boost them, not carry them.

I think the rangers will add larger assets in FA starting after next season. (Or at the TDL if they surprise us) They might add a few middle six talents this FA.

Again, how does adding talent stop you from developing talent? I would argue that getting to play with more talented linemates would make learning and adjusting to the NHL easier.

It's putting the cart before the horse. You need to know which horse you have before you buy the cart.

Is there some possible scenario with the way the kids develop where it would somehow be bad to have two elite goal-scorers on your team? I understand not selling off draft assets or prospects or being careful with your cap space until you know more about how productive your young core actually is. But none of that is happening in this scenario. So again, I'm just struggling to see the potential downside here. What could go wrong that would make signing Panarin and Skinner a mistake?

First off it's very rare for any team to go after two top end free agents at once. Minnesota was the last one to do that, and they probably regret the outcome (or will in three years). But assuming the rangers targetted one guy here... It's still a gamble. Adding one talent to an unproven team is almost worthless to start. A year of the contract gone without going anywhere. Especially after selling at this trade deadline... why sell just to get good immediately after. They want to do a proper rebuild. This is rushing it.

I give up. If you've got an actual explanation of how practically this move could hurt the Rangers long-term chances of building a sustainable cup contender I'm all ears. Otherwise, I bid you a good night.

Minnesota. Never properly rebuilt. Signed a bunch of assets. Look where they are. First round exits/missing the playoffs. The rangers are a bit more along, but getting the best free agents doesn't guarantee success.

Ehh? you just spent almost $20M a year on Panarin and Skinner and you want to wait for couple of years while rebuilding? LOL

I don't want to wait, I think that group will be good enough to make the playoffs right away. I'm just saying there's no pressure. Panarin and Skinner are young enough that you're going to get at least 3-4 seasons with them as elite goal-scorers, which means the Rangers would have some time to get this right. And waiting to sign free agents is a bad idea in my opinion, because free agents of the caliber of Panarin and Skinner are simply not available most summers.
