New ideas

Description
After signing Marner, Kapanen, Johnson, Leafs were left about 4.5 million over the cap. Which shows yet again if Marleau could somehow vanish, poof, go bye-bye to Robidas island (LTIR), or something of the sort. The leafs cap issues would be non existent. But since that's super unrealistic...

This trade is obviously highly unlikely, just something I haven't seen on here yet, trying to mix it up, get new ideas going, talk about something other than Carolina defense trades. Lots of philly fans on here that are going to roast that trade, I know. Oh well, just for fun/get some hopefully "friendly" discussion going.

I wouldn't if I was Toronto. Gostisbehere is worse than even Muzzin on defense. Don't let anyone deceive you he has 50 Giveaways and 18 Takeaways this year, and a 32.7% dZS.

I mean Ideally you'd trade Nylander and Kadri for Provorov or Sanheim. But I thought: 1) Philly would never accept that. 2) Provorov and Sanheim are both going to sign for more than Ghosts 4.5 which wouldn't help the Leafs cap situation at all.

But ideally Gost isn't the guy you need. You need defense he is an offensive defenseman with terrible puck control.

I agree with you. But he's the perfect kind of defenseman in Kyle Dubas' eyes... Not saying I like his game but I know Leafs management would. He's basically a Jake Gardiner replacement. Exact same type of player. But based on a philly team just posted on here, maybe I should have traded for Provorov if they actually think he's signing for 3.25

Probably. Nashville fans are thinking Subban is out the door maybe you could get one of the big 4 considering the Expansion Draft Coming up might be a great time to fetch one of the big four.

That would be nice, Cap wise Ekholm would be the only one that makes sense. And can't see Nashville wanting to move out arguably the best contract in the league.

Putting aside the argument that Nylander was promised he wouldn't be traded while Dubas is still GM (and how long will that last with these consistent 1st round playoff exits?), I'd imagine the offseason game plan is clear:

(1) Move out as many over-valued bad contracts as possible - Zaitsev is really the one that comes to mind as I'd doubt they'd convince Marleau to waive his NMC
(2) Get tougher without sacrificing speed - Brandon Tanev (UFA) comes to mind
(3) Overhaul the defensive look of this team - I would consider this both offensively and defensively, but defense is a must

If Leafs are looking at the Flyers, I'd think Myers and Sanheim would be the list on the backend, and I'd think they would look hard at Laughton for a 3C/4C, especially if Kadri is moved. Considering the positive and upward trend the Flyers are on, I'm not sure either defender would be available unless the Leafs overpaid. To me, Nylander for Sanheim and Laughton is an example of a Leafs' overpayment. If you add Kadri to the mix, I'd expect the Flyers to throw in Myers and a high prospect or high draft pick. I'm fairly certain the Flyers wouldn't be happy with that. So, if the Flyers and Leafs are to deal, I'd expect a deal like Kadri, Nylander and Liljegren (or perhaps Jeremy Bracco) for Sanheim, Myers, Laughton and a 2019 1st round draft pick. When you consider the fact that this deal saves the Leafs $11 million AAV upfront and probably at least $5 million after deals are worked out with their new RFAs, I think it's a win-win. I consider the Leafs ability to keep and afford Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanen the second win, of the win-win smile

I mean I agree with everything you said.

But to me the big trade you have laid out there at the end would be a hard no from the Leafs. One thing I guarantee you the Leafs DON'T do this off season is trade either of Liljgren or Sandin. Those two are vital pieces to this team in the next few years. As soon as they make the club they are a perfect extremely cheap option on the back end. Likely not next year (but possibly) most likely the year after I expect one of if not both of them to play in the NHL, and at under 1 mil cap hit each, those two are invaluable assets to the Leafs.
