Well, try making a rational 2019/20 roster with 83m instead of this silly list. Trading one player Nylander (with no money in return) solves the Leafs cap issue. Trading less amount, you need multiple trades to reach the 65m in net cap saving. Plus now you need multiple NHL replacements. Why do so many Leaf fans object to Nylander being traded? He just isn't that good as his 6 goals this season indicate. Heck his two best years are 20/40/60 seasons. Hardly untouchable status, but I guess some fans are more impressed by style than results. Now, I think Nylander might have more to give as a productive player but for cap reasons, he just might the guy has to be traded. A retired Marleau...solves more of the Leafs cap problems this off season.
He's been back on pace for 60'ish points January 20th though ... and his SH% is still 50% lower than his career average. I think he'll be fine.
And a rational roster is pretty easy to make if you trade Zaitsev (add picks / prospects until someone takes him) + trade Brown.
Something out of this will make it easy to keep the core forwards intact:
Rielly - Hainsey ($6,900,000)
Muzzin - Dermott (4,900,000)
Rosen - Oziganov ($1,600,000)
Borgman - Holl ($1,400,000)
Sandin - Liljegren (Options)
Defense = $14,800,000
Then elsewhere we'll have:
$750,000 - Sparks
$675,000 - Gauthier
$765,000 - Marchment (pressbox)
$775,000 - Petan
$775,000 - Moore
$840,000 - Bracco
$925,000 - Engvall (pressbox)
That's 15 roster spots for around $20,000,000 with around $62,000,000 left for the other 8 guys.
It's not pretty ... but it'll fit and give us $10,000,000 for upgrades in 2020 (Marleau gone + cap growth) with basically only Dermott getting a raise.
