Flipping Callahan TB BUF

Description
I will try to repost this every so often so that NYR, TB and BUF fans can all have a look. Overall I think every team involved adds (or also subtracts) something they are looking for.

TB dumps half of Callahan's salary, Rangers give them a PMD who will be cheap and can be inserted onto the third pair, receive a reward for taking on Callahan at 2.9, and move him near his home (Rochester) to Buffalo, where the Sabres pay a fairly small price for a physical, experienced veteran to help their young core.

Let me know your thoughts, and try not to take anything personally.

Notes:
1- I know Raddysh is a very good prospect, but TB is in a precarious situation with its cap, and every team knows that. It does not have to be Raddysh in this deal; it could be another prospect or higher round pick. Nevertheless, it will likely cost them something significant. At least with this trade, TB fills a need, and grabs a solid third pairing defenseman who can fit into their system and move the puck.

2- Callahan has a 16 team trade list, so it does not have to be the Sabres picking him up. I picked them because he wants to go back closer to home, and I figured they would be somewhat interested in Callahan as a leader in the locker room. With only a $1.75 million cap hit for one year, BUF may consider this as an option.

3- This would not be my final NYR 19-20 roster; only showing the Callahan transactions.

Or Buffalo just sends him home to Rochester, doubt they move a 4th for that though. Seems petty but theirs a better chance that 4th plays for Buffalo than Callahan

You are paying 1.75 of the cap hit for a year- the return can be less but you're not paying 5.8. Read.

Fair. It could be a different pick or a player NYR would like to take a chance on that BUF does not want anymore. Was more focused on the Tampa transaction. Like I said, it does not have to be Buffalo; I just picked them because he's from Rochester.

Except you can't send him to AHL due to his NMC.

personally? no

but I think there are teams around the league who DO value him, and not trying to capitalize on that is poor asset management.

People who I have spoke with on this website have valued Pionk around a 4th or so. If you could grab another pick from TB then sure go get it. Most people however seem to value him as a third pairing defenseman, and to grab someone like Raddysh, or Katchouk or one of TB's better prospects for him would be a good pickup in my opinion, especially when Deangelo has performed well.

Sabres cut out the middle man. They have cap space. Callahan, 2.9 retained, Raddysh and a pick for a pick and a border line d prospect.

TB is looking for a player to play on their third pair. Who in BUF's system is cheap and can play on TB's third pairing next season? I could not find anyone that would be of preference over Pionk.

Also, do you want Callahan at 2.9 million? Seems like a lot, especially if you want to in free agency (besides retaining Skinner).

And if Buffalo passes on their end of the trade?? Why do the Rangers want Callahan at 2.9 million???

I think NYR can find a team to take Callahan for a year at $1.75 million. As stated in the notes, I picked Buffalo only because Callahan is from Rochester. Callahan has 15 other teams on the list, so I think NYR could find a trading partner for a small return, like a 4th or 5th rounder.

Even if NYR cannot find a trading partner, NYR are rebuilding, and can retain Callahan at 2.9 unless they are looking to spend most of their cap space in free agency. BUF is looking to start winning now, so I am not sure why they would want Callahan at $2.9 million. Thought this would be a cheap price for a locker room leader that Buffalo could add, while still being able to add more in free agency. Plus, if need be, NYR can retain a little more on Callahan.

Unsure whether all those question marks are trying to signal tone. No need to be upset here; not trying to upset you or anything. Just thought this would be a reasonable set of moves for all teams.

Raddysh would be the Sabres best prospect. An extra 1.+ mil would be worth it. Callahan for one year or Raddysh for 6??

Not following...Raddysh is currently in TB's system. These are two separate transactions. NYR first trades for Callahan and Raddysh, then elects to keep Raddysh, and give Callahan to BUF for a much cheaper price than 2.9 million.

Oh sorry I follow now. Sure that makes sense, but BUF may want to go get a Dzingel or Hayes for example, but would not be able to if they retain half of Callahan's contract.

They certainly could do that; just not sure if they would want to. Also, NYR of course has to act quick enough to get this chain of trades done.

Well Quinn used him as a top PK/top PP/top pair guy for the majority of the season. Which means one of 2 things

1) Either Quinn is the dumbest coach in the league
2) Someone else values him similarly.

I'm holding out hope that it's the latter, which means a 4th is WAYYY to low.

Or at this point, because they are in the middle of the season and want to evaluate their players to see who they want going forward, and given that they are not making the playoffs this season, Pionk, being a younger player with less experience in the league, is given a shot. It's hard to figure out the true motive of a team in NYR's position this season, especially at this point in the season, where they continue to rotate players in and out of the lineup. Quinn also has admitted earlier in the season that Pionk lost a little bit of his confidence, as he sat out a while after injury. Quinn and management may way to play him to give him that confidence back.

Whatever the reason is, however, may not necessarily have a major impact on his value. I see NYR fans think he's worth a 2nd; I see other NYR fans think he's awful. An objective test would be to ask non-NYR fans about his value (if they know anything about Pionk and NYR for that matter). I tried to take the middle ground here and evaluate him as a third pairing defenseman, who will be cost effective for TB, and worth around a 4th. If you want to add a pick here or there, that's fine, but I thought the fair base would be Callahan (retaining half) and Raddysh for Pionk.

sure I just don't think it's a fan perspective, it's a stat perspective. His analytics are atrocious. But we know that a handful of teams don't really use those in evaluations. To those GM's, he'd be fine. So anyone who knows on-ice metrics thinks he's awful, and most who don't see a career .4 p/gm dman who can pk, run a pp, and handle tough matchups. Guys like Keith Gretzky, Jim Benning, and such will view that highly. Whereas Dubas will not.

And I think GMs like Gretzky and Benning are aware of his "atrocious" stats and can use that to their advantage in negotiations to lower the price for Pionk. I think BreisBois is smart enough to know he does not need to pay such a high price for him. But if you think this is off we can agree to disagree; we've seen stranger trades in the NHL.

Buffalo would NOT be interested unless Callahan was coming with a piece like you have the Rangers getting
Otherwise,
we already have PLENTY of 4th liners
Larsson, Girgensons, Sobotka, Rodrigues, Wilson, and even Okposo at this point

No way they’d add ANOTHER one,
unless we are getting something more out of it than just tough Vet leadership
