Montreal can afford it for a couple of years and buy it back after. Not a lot of money to pay in the last four years. Luongo will be better than Niemi for the next two years.

The Avs would be the most likely drafting 4th overall, so that's a good time to snag Byram. They'd probably want something involving (but not necessarily all of) Domi, Drouin, Kotkaniemi, 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, etc.

I thought MTL were robbing Florida ( Luongo cap dump trade ), but I’ll do that in a heartbeat if I was MB

considering his age, contract, injury history, NO way mtl makes that move. 0 chance. unless florida gives a really good asset back. plus he has a m-ntc. idk if he waives it for mtl

My goodness the comments are baseless here...... do you not understand that Montreal hasn't been able to spend up to the cap for how long now? You do realize many high priced UFA's don't want to come here right? The Habs core is all signed pretty long and the cap is rising substantially next year?

Montreal is blessed with cap space. They always have extra because they don't have anyone extra to spend it on. Taking on Luongo is not going to make the Habs screwed. Luongo not only could still be the backup for another couple seasons or so but worse comes to worse he would likely be bought out. Vancouver has 15% retained so the buyout cap hit if bought in 2020 off season (after he backed up Price for 1 season) would be 3.9M for two years......... oh no!!! What ever will the Habs do???????

Montreal cap space in 17-18: $7,191,612
Montreal cap space in 18-19: $8,529,086
Montreal approx cap space in 19-20: 12M..........

So whats the problem? We'd be getting (hopefully) Bowen Byram with the draft pick, best dman in the draft literally the most important position of need for the Habs AAAAAAAAAAANDDDD Jo Huberdeau who is still young, on a good contract and on pace for 80+ points this year.... O

Montreal makes this deal without even thinking about it. THAT is precisely why Florida will not do it. When a team needs cap space, they don't make stupid trades just so they can sign Bread and BOB... that reverses the benefit of adding those guys...

luongos contract is the same as webers in the sense that mtl could get f u c k ed if he retired early. thats why i dont do that trade.

Please read up on this.

The team that most of the salary being paid out bears the responsibility. If Weber wants to retire early, Nashville gets screwed mostly, Montreal at most if he retired at 37 would be like 400K a year. if Luongo retires, I believe Vancouver and Florida get most of the penalty. Montreal would have like 50K penalty.......

Quoting: Spectorhockey website
Luongo is now 38. As James Mirtle noted in 2014, his cap-recapture penalties could get really ugly for the Canucks if he retires within two years of his contract end date, ranging from over $4.2 million to $8.5 million. The Panthers will also be penalized, but at most they’ll get tagged with $1.4 million annually if he retires next year and $1.28 million if retirement is in 2019. In 2020, it would be only $73K and nothing in the final year of his deal.

But lets say your right. Montreal gets the cap penalty instead. Do you think Luongo wants that? No, it wuld piss a bunch of people off, including teammates.... All he wants to do is not play hockey anymore and collect his pay cheque. So let him. Habs send him to the minors for the final two years of his contract, tell him to not show up to any games or practices and they'll pay him his money regardless until his contract is over. The player gains nothing from officially retiring. Officially retiring is just for the media to do a conference and you can be nominated for the HHOF. The "real" benefits AKA the money can be given whether you officially retire or not. It makes no difference to them. So why piss off the team if that's the case?

There are so many ways to get around this also!! Look at Zetterberg for example. He is just going to stay "injured" for the rest of his contract even though he could come back eventually, you don't magically stay injured forever. He doesn't want to play anymore and the Wings are ok with that because they need the cap space anyway so paying him to not play is fine by them.

thats fair. but i still dont make that trade. too much long term commitment for an older guy. highly doubt the habs brass does it. they're working on lindgren and mcniven. luongo becomes an obstacle to that

Lingren is included in the trade. Mcniven will be ready in two years and Primeau is the real project. When I designed this trade, I thought the issues would come from Florida fans.

If it not Byram then it will be Broberg
