Why, though? Shatty is closing in on being a UFA. Seems like a bad idea.

Note - didn't see your description. $10m per is hilarious...

Chiarelli will over pay to get a top 2 dman for the long term. It's impossible for Edmonton to sign a top end dman through free agency, so his chances are better of doing it through a trade. Chiarelli signed Chara in 2006 to a $7.5 mill per year deal when the cap was $39 mill., or 19% of the total cap. That's the equivalent of $14.2 mill per year with today's cap. He values the position more than other GM's. Unless Shattenkirk is adamantly against going to Edmonton, I think Chiarelli waives a monster contract in front of him to sell him on coming to Edmonton for the next 8 years.

In order for Edmonton to agree to this trade, they would need Shattenkirk to agree to a long term deal. If not, then no deal.

Close, that's a Garth Snow special *80 years for $300,000,000. It's a very reasonable $3.75M until he's 99 years old.

RNH AND a first seems like a bit much. If I am an Oilers fan, I would think a 2/3 round pick may be more tolerable. Especially, as the guys above me put it, that Shatty is close to UFA status

Igor - you and others seem to be having difficulty following this scenario. This would be a trade and sign deal. St. Louis would have to allow Edmonton to talk with Shattenkirk and determine if he would agree to a long term deal if they made a trade for him. If he says yes, then you pull the trigger. Edmonton has no shot at Shattenkirk next year when he's a UFA. It's much easier for them to get a player of this caliber through a trade. St. Louis knows this too and will use it as leverage. If St. Louis is going to put Shattenkirk on the market, there will be a bidding war of offers from multiple teams.

I don't have trouble understanding this scenario. My point is that RNH and a first is still a bit much for Shattenkirk. Dougie Hamilton got a first and two seconds (15, 45, and 52 overall) & was a highly coveted young, big, puck mover. This trade sends the 4th overall and a #1 center for a highly coveted, older puck mover. I don't see the market to give up both a #1 center (STL is seeking a good hockey trade) in addition to the #4 overall pick. And in comparing both of these defensemen, they have eerily similar stats over past few seasons and both are right handed shots.

I think you kind of answered your own question though. Why does Shatty sign this 80M deal with Edmonton? Other teams are not going to offer that high so you could totally get him without giving up assets. If he wants to choose where he goes then why would he sign this deal with Edm now?

Its kind of a catch 22.

And IgorK is right, Nuge plus the 4th for Shatty and Lehtera is an over payment but even more importantly an unneeded over payment. Shatty is good but he's not a top d man anyway. He's never going to win the Norris. Lehtera is a decent second line centre. If you would swap Shatty for Pietrangelo then maybe you have a deal.

I may have over-shot the mark with 8 years $80 mill., but I could see Chiarelli trading for a top dman on the condition of signing him a long term, over-market extension. Even if Edmonton comes in with the top offer to a UFA - they will still lose out. So, there best chance is to do it via a trade on the condition the player signs a long term deal.

As for the trade value....I think you guys are mis-judging the market a bit. Dougie Hamilton forced the Bruins hand, by telling them he wanted out. So, I don't think the Hamilton trade is very comparable to the Shattenkirk situation. I think a trade for Shattenkirk, or equivalent, will more resemble the value that Arizona got in return for Keith Yandle. 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, a top young prospect (Duclair), and a solid middle aged prospect (Moore). I think Shattenkirk is probably a better overall dman then Yandle too. I don't think it's far-fetched for Edmonton to give up #4, and RNH, for Shattenkirk and Lehtera. Especially if it is on the condition that Shattenkirk signs long term this summer.
