I agree that's too much for Carter, and that Montreal probably isn't a good fit for Carter, but your #1 is BS. Carter will not retire if the Kings try to trade him. That was all speculation by Bobby Mac due to the back-diving nature of his contract. Carter has never said that he will retire if traded.

He just said that Carter's case was interesting in the sense that if he didn't like his trade destination he could potentially threaten to retire as a form of no-trade protection, since the Kings would then be crippled by recapture penalties.

Martinez will cost a lot more than that. Defensemen like him aren't exactly common. Try Foote and a 2019 2nd for starters....
