If Leafs want out of the Zaitsev contract

Description
Yes, I know, Dubas said he wouldn't trade Nylander. But if the Leafs truly want out of Zaitsev's contract, they will have to pay a price. From what I've seen (which admittedly isn't a ton but at least some), he looks best suited on the 3rd pairing but is OK in a 2nd pairing role. The plan would be to trade Pateryn anytime between now and next year.

This makes us worse this year, but we add an extremely talented young player along with a nice prospect from WPG to build for our future.

ANA
  1. Bitetto, Anthony
  2. Brown, J.T.
Détails additionnels:
Waivers, just chose Anaheim since they are the 1st team listed.

Not sure why we claimed Bitetto...
3.
MIN
  1. Brown, Connor
  2. Liljegren, Timothy
  3. Nylander, William
  4. Zaitsev, Nikita
Détails additionnels:
Leafs are taking on $11,293,750 but are getting rid of $13,562,366 clearing up over $2M in space (I used Nylander's cap hit next year when calculating this, so the $2M in savings is for next year). That doesn't seem like a lot, but it will go a long way with the Marner and Matthews contracts.
TOR
  1. Coyle, Charlie
  2. Spurgeon, Jared (2 593 750 $ retained)
  3. Zucker, Jason
Détails additionnels:
Zucker gives the Leafs a long-term piece to replace Nylander. He's older, but he's still younger than Kadri and Tavares and has some nice term on his deal. Spurgeon helps solidify the Leafs D significantly, he's a massive upgrade from Zaitsev. Coyle is much better than Brown and would add a very good option as a 3rd line RW.

I think the term on Coyle and Spurgeon along with Nylander's potential makes it relatively even. I thought long and hard about adding Liljegren... I guess it depends on your opinion of Nylander.

From a pure hockey perspective, a young top 6 forward, an ok defenseman and a bottom 6 player for a cheap top 6 forward, a great top 4 D at 3 million for the next 2 years and a middle 6 forward whos underrated

Added Liljegren... I think it looks better but I'm still not sure Toronto would bite on that.

I like this a trade a lot for Minnesota and Toronto Minnesota Gets a Guy that can become a Number 1 Center with Minnesota and Zaitsev and we would have our DCore locked up for a couple years and Toronto gets better on the Right side of Defense

I agree I think both sides come out winners. Problem for Toronto is that they are giving up two pieces that were thought to be extremely important as little as a year ago (and I'm sure some Leafs fans still hold that view). I think Toronto showed they are willing to go all-in with the Muzzin trade. They had defensive issues and adding Muzzin and Spurgeon with this trade would go an enormous way to helping them win a cup. Zucker has had a better season than Nylander and would give them a better chance this year without hindering future years.

I haven’t seen Nylander play much...but, if he truly has #1C probability...i would sign off on this.
