Description
Trying to fix this mess.
Puljujärvi needs to go, it is clear this fast team is not for him, and needs to go somewhere to grow and become a top guy. LA is on the low and could use a young guy with small cap to help them. Toffoli, like Persaon is the man to move as he needs a change of scenery.
Saros should be the biggest target, he will be hard to tug away from Nashville, but with three different draft picks to a team that doesnt have a deep prospect pool could help. Peka is still god like too.
Russell is purely cap dumb, though I feel like a 3rd rounder from the stars is a big much, it is probably closer to a 4th rounder.
As for free agents, a guy like Dzingal is a guy to go after, having a good year on a bad Ottawa team and with speed, he could play either beside McDavid or Dri.
Another guy I would bring back is Marron, having a bad year in St. Louis. He could be a great third liner

Preds laugh at that. Saros is signed cheaply for a few years and will take over for Rinne eventually.

Any idea what it would take? I feel like a 1st plus would make it work no?

Nashville isn’t trading Saros. There’s a reason they signed rinne for only 2 seasons. If anything try to sign a veteran goalie for cheap like McElhinney for 1.5 million a season. Evan Bouchard isn’t going to be a top 4 defenceman next season. If anything, he’ll start the season in the AHL. Buyout Sekera and Lucic and trade away Kassian.

Not sure if they are really interested in the idea. He’s better than a 3rd of the leagues starters. Young, cheap. Rinne is 35. No replacement in the organization for Saros. Sure they can bring up Groesnick and he will be an ok backup, but nobody ready to step in and be the guy if something happens to Rinne, nobody else ready to take over for him in 2 years. In other words, it would have to be something to make them have no choice not to take it.

Lucic's contract is literally buyout proof, use the buyout calculator on this site, there's basically no significant cap relief for four seasons, he's just plain dead weight for the Oilers.

Fair enough with the Saros, I was more thinking along the lines of IF they could get him away. I know its highly unlikely!

The oilers are fine with keeping kris russell. He's a solid defensive top 4 guy now, maybe not completely worth his contract, but worth enough of it. That trade with the kings is too risky for the oilers, and while puljujarvi may work out later, no team wants to pay for him. I personally think he'll work out, probably in 2 years or so. Remember, he's only 20. So many guys in the NHL break out later in their careers. and yeah, that saros trade is laughable. Nashville sees him as their future starter.

Im just worred with Puljujarvi... no offense, Edmonton has a horrible track record at drafting high and having player flame out. I hope he does too, cause hes a great guy but he NEEDS to get it going ASAP

Value wise in a vacuum 1st + would be fine... but.... then you consider that Nashville sees Saros as Rinne's heir and it doesn't work. Nashville's goaltending pipeline is pretty weak after what we have on the NHL level. Rinne is at the end of his career so Nashville isn't in a position to trade Saros away.

Okay but there’s no point in giving up a high end draft pick to get rid of him.

I never said they should do that either. I think the Oilers have really been backed into a corner by Chiarelli and it's gonna be tough to get out and I'm not just meaning the Lucic signing. Lol! They're seriously best to just bury him on the 4th line with some healthy scratches mixed in there. Right now they don't have enough assets that they can afford to lose to rid themselves of Lucic and there's no guarantee any free agents of value(Stone,Duchene, etc.) would even sign with the Oilers anyway. The Oilers 1st round pick could be a lottery pick so is it really worth sacrificing that just to get rid of Lucic? Definitely not! Also their prospects like Puljujarvi and Yamamoto are either slow to develop or are being mismanaged by the Oilers, the latter being the likely reason but either way that's the way it is at the moment. Chiarelli has also signed or acquired too many depth players that are getting paid more than they're worth and they all still have one more year left before they expire so next season there isn't much cap relief coming, guys like Benning, Brodziak, Manning, etc. all still have a year to go before they expire. Those 3 combined make $5 million which could be going towards a 20-25 goal scorer but is instead going to a 4th line center and 2-6/7 defenseman. Injuries have also hurt them no doubt but the problems that plague the Oilers are many so fixing this mess won't be easy and trading the 1st round pick just to get rid of Lucic isn't going to fix anything in fact it could make things worse. The only piece not named McDavid of any trade value is Draisaitl, I think they should see what he's worth on the trade market, if the return is big enough(top6F) it'd probably be enough to get things turned around in Edmonton. Sorry for the long rant but the Oilers mess is worthy of a long rant.. Lol
