Edmonton makes this trade because shedding Lucic salary is a near miracle, so having to give up something just for someone to take that contract would be a win. In this scenario, they shed the salary, and also get a 1st round pick to spark the re-tool needed in Edmonton.

Leafs make this trade for a few reasons. Shedding Zaitsev’s contract is important and getting Larsson to shore up their right side on Defence. Larsson and Reilly as a top pairing D would be a big upgrade. Adding Lucic at only 4 million would be a risk with 5 years remaining, BUT, he is somebody who would love to get a shot at Boston in the playoffs and could add some grit to that third line once Marleau is out of the equation. Losing the first round pick this year won’t seem to hurt to much seeing as it should be in the 20-28 range.

Shedding Lucic's Contract is near a miracle he says, and then trades that contract to one of 3 teams with the most difficult cap situation to manage next off season. There is no chance Lucic will ever be traded to TO.

I see what you’re saying, but trading Zaitsev’s contract for Lucic’s contract at 4 mil is a win for the leafs IMO

Edmonton would be wise to take a deal like this... yes losing Larsson would hurt however you could use the pick in a package deal to try acquiring a puck moving RHD. Edmonton has some strong D in their system Klefbom & Nurse would be your top pairings LHD and you could slot Zaitsev with either one to make a capable 2nd pairing.

Yes if you like sending 4 million in cap to Oilers and taking 8 million back. If you made this trade, you would go from having 23 million in cap next year to 19 million in cap space to sign Matthews, Marner and Kapanen, GOOD LUCK with that.

Ballsy Trades! But I like them. Giving up a first-round draft pick for a team that may not make the playoffs would be a better trade-off than losing our young d-prospects - which will be needed to balance out the Leafs cap hell in the coming seasons. It would be kinda cool to see Lucic in a Leafs uniform squaring off against Boston in the playoffs.
