Realistically, the value to take a player with negative value sits right between what a is necessary for a team to feel its worth it for them and what the other team is even willing to do for that cap space. its a fine line with Lucic IMO.
If you are EDM, does losing 6M of virtually dead cap equate to Evan Bouchard and lottery pick? No it doesn't. Its not worth it.
If ever EDM got to the point where they so desperately needed cap space (for whatever reason), it would make more sense for them to trade a player with value like Nuge, for fair value back but no cap coming back to another team than it would to trade Lucic with all that extra attached.
With that said, if Edm could offer a late'sh 1st round pick somehow, I as a Habs fan woudl be ok with a Lucic+1st for an AHL'er type deal. Montreal has the luxury of cap space and no one to spend it on so taking Lucic and buying him out, even with his insane cap penalty could still be worth it. You'd essentially be paying some money to buy a 1st rounder. The cap space you no longer have would only be a problem if you needed it for something.
Everything has a price. Judging by what I would do if I were in charge, that price where both teams should be ok with it would be:
Milan Lucic
1st round pick (21st-31st)
for
Career AHL'er
7th round pick
