Fleury is just too old for the core.

Sometimes you get Luongo and Brodeur who stay great late.

But you usually don't. If we trade for him this summer it'll be a few months before his 32nd birthday. In comparison we got Giguere a few months before his 33rd birthday or in other words 1 year younger.

He is too old, yes. But that price is ridiculously low.

I look at fleury as a guy that can fill a spot for 2-3 years while you develop a goalie. I think you have to draft at least 2 goalies at the draft this year.

He's soon to be 32, making 5.75 mill a year. He does not have much value especially with the expansion draft around the corner

Leafs would likely protect him. Not much of a chance Sparks, Bibeau etc get picked.

Let's read the rules of putting guys on LTIR and think you can get automatic cap relief. Lupul unless he is injured all year, he will come back as a Leaf. Robidas as 35+ signing is not eligible for cap relief. The Leafs don't need Fleury, they got Bernier and gotta see if Bibeau or Sparks are NHL ready/good.

35+ contracts are eligible for LTIR relief, they do not receive any cap benefits from retirement, buyout, or being buried

Beat me to it. Although if you bury a contract in the minors you do get a 950K cap reduction. So technically is cap relief.

The one example i'm hazy on still though it the scenario where a player is injured and due to the injury forced to retire as a result. Pronger, Savard, etc Also, what exactly will happen with Lecavalier's contract when he retires, not due to injury but because he chooses to? Does that not mean LA must still have a cap hit but just not need to pay his salary anymore? (Same goes for Philly)

Neither Pronger or Savard are 35+ contracts, and neither have retired. If they don't retire the team has to fulfill the contract, and they continue to be paid.

When Lecavalier retires, the cap hit comes off the books, since he is not a 35+ contract. I am not sure on the details behind their actual salary value, I assume the team is no longer paying the player any longer.

The 35+ rule is limited to the age of when the player signed the contract (on June 30th before the first season of the contract)

Edit/ also forgot to mention, that for 35+ contract in the minors, there is no $950k relief, if it is the 2nd or later year of a 35+ contract, they receive $100k in relief if the player is sent to the minors

RE: Pronger, Savard - Ok so they are technically not retired but we all know they are retired due to injury right? Since they've made it public that they will not return to the team going forward? Pronger might even be named to the HHOF before he is technically retired and is literally working for another corporation too. Whats the logic in this?

Cool, didn't know about the 35+ rule for buried players. Thanks!
