Description
Give Edmundson or O'Reilly the C and move on without the underachieving leadership of Steen and Petro...if we don't like Backes on the 4th line we can buy him out in the future...as Henrik ages Husso is groomed by him to take over...

That's probably reasonable value for Pietrangelo, but the whole UFA in 1.5 years thing would make me very wary of making that move.

You've gotta think that the Leafs just stick to their guns and hold onto him, because there's no way anyone is dumb enough to overpay for Nylander, and then overpay him long term as well.

The cost of getting Pietrangelo is too much for TO, they wouldn't even think about that trade. Costs them too much for a 1.5 years of him. He's going to want 10 mill on his next deal and some idiot will pay him that much, it won't be Dubas.

Yep, Dubas has never paid eight figures to get a guy to play out his 30s in Toronto... smile

Does Pietrangelo turn 30 to start the deal? Which means the deal would run to either 37 or 38? Because Tavares was 27 when he signed and will be turning 34 when its over. That is a far cry from his late 30's.

From what I understand about the aging curve in the NHL for forwards and defenseman, I'd say TOR signing Petro from 31-37 wouldn't be too different from TOR signing JT from 28-34, but hey, not worth a fuss.

The cost is very high to acquire a RH #1 Defenseman in the NHL these days. Looking at the Drouin/Sergachev and Hall/Larsson trades of the recent past you will see an extremely high price being spent to acquire a RH defenseman with upside. Therefore the cost for a legit #1 will be even higher. Also right now Nylander is a movable asset for TML. I put a lot of thought into the trade scenarios that I made. I don't want to be the typical poster here who just pretends they are on the PS4. I looked at pros and cons for each team and that seems like a reasonable value for both sides with TML having the option of working out a reasonable extension with Petro before free agency hits. Also, Petro's skill set should age well in the league as he's not a physical d-man he plays the puck and uses his positioning to defend so he shouldn't have the wear and tear of a Doughty or a Weber as he ages.

I understand where you are coming from, but the trade doesn't make sense. Pietrangelo is too old to trade for a top 22 year old talent. Its a short sighted trade that creates a lot of problems for the Leafs. Also currently, TO's defence is just playing better than St Louis. TO has the 2nd best goal differential in the entire league. They don't need to massively overpay for a short term fix that costs them the long term answer for the problem they are trying to fix that isn't big enough to fix right now anyways. And yes I know that was hard to read and follow, but its the reality of the situation. TO has a very limited appetite for making moves. Nylander is a situation they are dealing with but trading him isn't necessary and shouldn't be done if its going to be a bad trade. This is a bad trade for their team. It shortens their window to contend which they shouldn't do unless they are getting old themselves. Right now they have time and can afford to be patient.
