Five years is a term the Leafs don't want. It leads right into UFA. So more years, or a 1-4 bridge. I'm not a fan of Carrick, but the Leafs shouldn't be giving him away as he might be needed this year. Holl is more likely candidate 8th Dman as he would likely clearly waivers

Definitely, because you have Dubas on speed dial? No, both sides want a long term deal so we are talking 7 or 8 years and that term will increase the cap hit. Which isn't at all a problem either, he'll more than earn whatever contract he gets.

I think this could work but we would have to see how gardiner handles the tougher assignments. This leaves less juggling to do when we need to rest hainsey. We could simply insert borgman or Rosen.

I really think the pairing of Gardiner and Reilly is so unfounded. It's this illusion of creating of "a # 1pairing". The offence of Gardiner and Reilly needed to split up into two pairs. Gardiner is not trusted to be PK, I gotta think he needs an solid Dman beside on regular shifts....either Zaitsev or Ozzie.
Hainsey did very well with Reilly last year and since the Leafs seem to have to enough NHL good LHD, I imagine Hainsey has to play on the right side. Let's hope Babcock doesn't overwork him like last year's rented mule.

If Carrick ever got to play regular minutes he'd do exactly what he did last night. He won't be the star of the game ever but he'll never be a problem. He has a very good stick and is a bull dog. I'd play him over Hainsey on the right side to be honest. Hainsey is good in front of the net and is a great PK guy but he's not the fastest anymore and he's on his weak side and that does make it hard for him to press the play up the right hand side of the ice. I think Hainsey would be far better on the 3rd pairing left side.

I was also impressed with Holl, he's another guy that is just solid. Won't blow you away with any part of his game but he's just smart all around (At least that's how he looked in the small sample size I've seen him in.)

Ozhiganov is also looking pretty good. I really don't think TO needs to make any moves on the back end, they need to just play better team defence.

It would be an experiment for sure, I’m not a hater of Gardiner and I think he was pretty good defensively last season. My issue is trying to get hainsey som rest this year and get Borgman into the lineup a bit. Now Injuries may play a part in doing that granted. If there were a way to get Hainsey back to the left side this would work out well for when he is rested. Yes Holl and carrick can both fill in on the right but I don’t see them as being part of the future. I think that Borgman or Rosen will be needed for the next few years till we se if sandin is ready.

I was a fan of Borgman last year. If he deserves to be in top 6, maybe so switching to the right side by some one is necessary. You and me are kinda optimistic about the Leafs next year even wiihout Gardiner and Hainsey. Borgman, Rosen, Liljegren...maybe Sandin could be ready.

I’m not opposed to dermott switching over either and pairing up with gardiner so long as he keeps progressing how he has. I didn’t get to watch the second game against Ottawa just the condensed version. Apparently Rosen did well too. Borgman in that first game was fantastic. I would rather see hainsey’s down time going to the left side so we can have that sorted out, I’m sure liljegren will get some starts on the right but I would really like to be patient with him and just make sure he is ready to go next year. Next season:

Reilly/Zaitsev
Dermott/liljegren
Borgman/Ozhiganov

I feel really good about this. We have been drafting well in the later parts of the 1st 2nd and even third rounds. If we can keep developing the future looks bright, even with our offence. As these kids move up we can keep the cupboards full of prospects and picks by moving out other players that aren’t part of our core. It’s beneficial to farm players rather than chase them in FA or trades.

I think with our offence generated by the blue line and some good team defence coming back from the forwards it makes for a very potent two way system.
