I see this kinda thing all the time. You don't want to give up anything that would hurt, so you give up 5 okay things. If you want a 59 point d man, the price tag will hurt. Also trust me, you don't want Krug on your top pair

For an elite point producer from the bankend, this deal doesn't really get me excited. Boston has a ton of LHD prospects in the pipeline + Chara, Moore and Grz on the roster (not including Krug). If Boston is trading Krug, it's for help up front.

You really don't like this? this is basically a 1st, (2) 2nds and Dillion (who you could probably deal for a 2nd or 3rd). it could enable them to move one of their D prospects or Merkley in the future. It also frees up another 2m to add as needed at the deadline.

Merkley is a RD

Not really. With the current core, Boston has a smaller window to win with them. Dillion is the only piece that would play right away. Merkley maybe makes the jump in a year or two, but by then the window is almost shut for the current core. The picks are just wild cards and it could be as much as 4-5 years if they make the NHL. It just doesn't seem like a move that makes sense for Boston's current situation.

Merkley is an interesting prospect, but here are three reasons why I'm not interested:
1. When a d man puts up that many points in junior and is picked in the 20s, there's a reason for it.
2. With Carlo, mcavoy, Miller, and Zboril (who has frequented the right side), I see no need for a right d.
3. Bergeron, krejci, Marchand, tuukka, and Chara aren't exactly young. This isn't the time to trade for the future. By all means, trade Krug, but do it for an established top six forward with term

I think sjs is looking more for offensive assets right now (to replace Thornton/Pavelski) - look what they offered to Tavares and their rumoured interest in Panarin.

About Merkley being draft at 20s, I heard that his attitude might be the problem (but look what they did with E. Kane in sjs), for example Zadina, was supposed to be 3rd or 2nd, ended up 6th, because other teams did not want winger. Edmonton drafted Bouchard because he is more NHL ready than Merkley, so I think these are another reasons why Merkley ended up after 20s.
