Habs trade Patches

Description
If Pacioretty was involved in the LA trade (rumored), I'd imagine this would be the scenario playing out between the two teams.

Personally, ownership in Montreal needs to understand what Pacioretty provides as leadership and character to the team, on and off the ice, it's irreplaceable. Also, having him play for his current value is robbery, regardless if he only plays 70 games a season and punches 20 goals or slightly less than that. I understand the woes both sides (Player and Organization) went through over the past two or three seasons, but moving on might be the best option for all parties. Attempting to make the best of a trade like this is always hard, but LA gaining Patches and Shaw (when healthy) makes them add grit and net presence in their fast paced Pacific Division. Carter is getting older, but has held value over his career and helped every team he's played for (PHI, CBJ, & LAK) get into the playoffs and has a few Cups (2012 & 2014) to show for it. Pearson rounds out the trade to help fill the gap that Pacioretty would leave behind, and has potential to gain 50+ points with new coaching staff and new line mates.

Let me know what you think, both Kings fans and Habs fans. I attempted to make this deal fair and favorable for both teams, but fans help insight on these ideas. Cheers folks.

Montreal says no instantaneously. Carter is 33 and signed for another 4 years and Pearson is a good player but Montreal doesn't need another LW. If they move Pacioretty its for picks and prospects, they're in a rebuild and are looking for future assets.

Why would the Kings trade 2/3rds of their 2nd line for not even an upgrade in Patches for Carter and a big downgrade in Pearson for Shaw.

Getting Carter would be benificial for the Habs C (not RW) playing against any 1C in the NHL.
Here how I see the lines:
Domi- Carter- Armia
Pearson- Drouin- Gally
Lekhonen- Danault- Byron/ Hudon

But this deal is DEAD anyway!!!

Montreal wouldn't say no and nor should they. He's old, but Carter would instantly be the #1 C on the team -- the best we've had since Koivu -- and Pacioretty will be dust in the wind come next spring. However, if there's any truth to rumours that Pacioretty wanted $30M more than what LAK was offering at the draft -- and why he fired his agent -- that means he's expecting $10M+ per year. It won't happen, but that's where things sit. Habs are have an immovable asset and are likely only to get a little rental value come the deadline.

The Kings are old and slow. Max would help them. But I agree that Shaw is not anyone's idea of a fair deal. Hudon or Lehkonen, however, along with a slightly better pick might make this work.

You do know that Carter is phenomenal skater, much better than Patches who is no slouch in his own right. Shaw is not a great skater, pearson is not a bad skater at all, average though
So old and slow? You made the Kings slower with this trade while adding in way more cap hit

Pacioretty replaces Carter technically, and Shaw is a sweetener to the package, since LA has always had a knack for having hard hitters who can score goals as part of their mantra. Montreal does gain Carter as a #1C or RW depending how they want to roll with Drouin and Domi on Wings or Center? Whatever the case, it gives flexibility for Coach Julien and puts less pressure on the 2nd and 3rd line Centers no matter which way they go. The Kings already signed Kovalchuk as either a LW or RW, adding Patches would mean he plays with Kovy and Kopitar on top line minutes, or plays a secondary scoring LW with Shaw playing Center and Taffoli on their RW. The Kings wouldn't be lost with this deal at all! I tried to make this about adjusting the problem directly with players to play now, not 5 years from now.

Either way, it seems I'm getting feedback from both sides agreeing that it isn't a perfect deal, but it isn't a bad one either.

Did i say anything about value? I said they say no because they want picks and prospects. Why would Montreal trade for an aged center they have to pay for another 4 years (which are likely to be the worst and last years of his career) when they know their not winning anytime soon, then want to include a LW winger that adds to the cap when we already have to many LW. Bergevin isnt trying to win this season, thats been pretty obvious, he isnt going to make another lateral trade when it comes to Pacioretty, its going to be a sell off trade for picks and prospects.

I wasnt saying it on Montreal side, I said why would the Kings trade 2/3 of their 2nd line.
Shaw is trash and to think you can swap him and patches for 2 good players is fantasy land, thats my point

Remember that in this fantasy trade, Montreal would retain some of Pacioretty's salary and a 4th round pick is added for LA. Shaw is a prototypical LA player to be honest, I felt he matched their style of play and gains a new opportunity. Pearson also isn't a blockbuster player, only making 40 points last season, but young enough to optimistically improve the following season.
