I didn't say Weber was scrap, but Sabres could spend 7.8 on UFA and keep their picks. This is one reason that many high priced players don't be traded. Teams would spend money on "their guys" and keep those young assets in the trade. Weber could be traded but it won't be for just picks, money would have to returned to the Habs. Probably one reason Karlsson hasn't been traded. Teams have to sent long term money back to the Sens for any hope of resigning Karlsson. Sure Ellis might resign Nashville but I don't know why you think it's a lock. Ellis is from Hamilton, and if home means anything (I think it's overrated) maybe the Sabres or Leafs could be in the running too. Sabres have two RHD Ristolainen and Bogosian, so it's not like a non playoff team is begging for another.
If Weber is traded it almost has to be a team that thinks Weber put them "over the top". But most teams are near the cap and really can't take on his 7.8m contract even short term. And yes Weber's 7.8m nine years left is a big detriment for any team. Canadiens and Sabres are somewhat is the position...out of the playoffs and the do have pieces in place for their rebuild. Why do you think Weber would be so valuable to the Sabres and not to the Canadiens?
Buffalo might be the one place in the NHL that has a harder UFA sell than Montreal.
I don't like this trade at all. Say what you will about Weber, last year was the first year in which he missed considerable action. Even then, playing on a bad ankle, he managed 16 points in 26 games. Taken out over a full season, that's 51 points. That's not washed up by any measure.
The only reason for BUFF to do this trade is because they want Dahlen mentored and protected by one of the better RDs in the game. For the same reason, I don't know why MTL would do this deal. Mete and Juulsen need mentoring now. Coming up the pipe are a few more solid D prospects. Even when Larry Robinson slowed down a bit, he and Rick Green had huge roles in developing Chris Chelios, Jyrki Lumme, Petr Svoboda, Mathieu Schneider and Eric Desjardins. Only Svoboda was a first-rounder in that group, which meant there was a lot of good on-ice schooling that went into getting the other guys up to Norris-contender status.
