Habs: Back to greatness!
These are good ideas, sort of.
If that PENS pick is not protected, the Habs should go for it. Chances are, PITT does fine, but a few injuries... who knows. It might be worth the gamble.
Until Shaw can play 40 games without getting hurt, he's untradeable .... period.
On Weber, you don't have to give up that pick. Instead, eat 50% of the cap (much more valuable to Toronto). The 1st should be useless, in that it will be between 27-31, most likely. Nylander is great. Take Woll (G) and Liljegren (D) and it's a great deal for both. Weber at $3.5M for 6 years with no trade restrictions for Nylander, Woll and Liljegren -- none of whom are part of the Leafs' immediate future.
For a lot of reasons, I wouldn't trade Price. But if you were to, Hanifin, Jankowski and a first might be OK. Chances are, you'd want to eat some cap and/or get a player who can help you immediately. Also, as an aside, who would you have in nets after moving Price? Perhaps you need to leave Woll with the Leafs and take Garret Sparks instead.

A Better Year
If Nurse were willing to sign for 2 years at $3.2M, it would have happened. Nurse wants term and a good payday. With Sekera all but finished forever, this should be a no-brainer -- unless there was more to that bar fight with Draisaitl than EDM fans want to admit.

What on earth?!!!!!!!
Buffalo gets Giordano and Lazar and the Flames get Reinhart, Nylander, two first and a few other useful bits and pieces? It's beyond overpay, it's criminal.

Big Moves
I think Canes fans have a tendency to overvalue their players (look at the Hanifin madness), but Rask, even at $4M, is worth a lot more than a 3rd rounder at this point in his career.
But if you insist, I am sure Montreal would gladly take him for that.

The Skinner deal should make everyone ask why was the price so low. I suspect there's something non-hockey-related or that he's a lockerroom issue. Clearly, for the Canes, they felt this was addition-by-subtraction.
What I can't figure out is why would the teams wait to make this deal? If it's worth doing, why wait? Teams gel better in training camp than after the all-star break, so get the fixes in place now.

Nikita Scherbak
I would agree with you except we don't know whether this kid can take a hit. Radulov was a hippo -- mean, ornery and heavy. Scherbak is a giraffe -- athletic, tall and very aware of his surroundings. There's a reason lion's rarely attack adult giraffes. They're f---ing tough. But it takes a while for them to grow up enough to stand their ground. I hope you're right about Nikita, but I'm reserving judgement.

Trade with MTL AND TOR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alexiscoors</b></div><div>Why don't just trade for Pac ? Like you said, MTL will be out of the run sooner than later. So keep your RHD in Montour(so you don't need Petry) and add Pacioretty instead of Nylander who, lets be honest, won't be trade. Pacioretty will cost you Larsson, a 1st and maybe a little more but you'll have a better depth by keeping Silverberg.</div></div>
Given the age and stage of the Ducks, they've got a 1- to 3-year window to snag a Cup or two before Getzlaf and Perry buy the farm. Adding Petry AND Pacioretty would make tick a lot of boxes. If the deal were rich enough for Montreal, the Habs could even sign Pacioretty and then eat 50% of the contract, which would allow the Ducks to keep Silfverberg.
As for waiting 20 games, no GM would do that. If this deal is worth doing, it's worth doing at Labor Day so that the teams can use training camp to gel.

BIG TRADE WITH ISLES, PATCHES SIGNS WITH ISLES
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>So, would you say that you overvalue all of your players every day? Or just the ones that end in Y?
Here's some perspective from a guy who doesn't hate the Habs-Alzner is slow, declining, and obviously as poor at evaluating talent as you are: <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/canadiens-sign-defenceman-karl-alzner-five-year-deal/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/canadiens-sign-defenceman-karl-alzner-five-year-deal/</a>
The first line is my personal favorite: "Karl Alzner says joining the Montreal Canadiens gives him a better chance to win a Stanley Cup than he had with the Capitals in Washington."</div></div>
By the middle of last season, Alzner was a better player than Emelin or Beaulieu. When that was written, the Habs also still had a reasonable expectation that Markov would take a 1-year deal and that Radulov would be back. Obviously, when that was written, the Habs 2017-18 picture looked a whole lot rosier. Fast forward through Weber missing his first season in 12 years, Price suffering through who know what it was, and Drouin taking half a year to become productive and, yes, the season was nowhere near what had been expected. That can't be laid at Alzner's feet.
While Alzner might not be worth that high a contract, the Habs have oodles of money and cap space. As I said above, there are only a very small handful of teams that wouldn't welcome him as part of their 23-man lineup and if you actually watched the Habs through the wretched depths of last winter, you'd know that Alzner was one of the more dependable players on the ice. On a team that was -55, Alzner averaged over 20 minutes per game and was -7 on the year. He wasn't the problem.
As for the other snark, GFY.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>msekkes</b></div><div>False. As you mentioned NMC the player can't be moved to the minors, traded, loaned, waived, etc without their permission. It does not protect them from buyouts however. A NTC only protects the player from being traded without their permission. Your example of a NTC is a MODIFIED NTC in which there are certain protections for the player, i.e. list of 7 teams they can't be traded to.</div></div>
Not sure how that's false. It's essentially what I said except you've added in a discussion about buyouts. I probably should have reversed things to say there are NTCs and then there are NMCs, which sometimes include NTC provisions, but are most often intended to simply keep players from getting the Wade Redden treatment.

Well I suspect we've all said things in job interviews that we didn't entirely mean. I am sure Alzner meant that he wants to help the Habs win. And, contrary to what many think, the Habs are not as sorry as the Leafs fans would like to believe. I am very much looking forward to the day Weber shows us what he's like when his knee and ankle are both healthy (that knee injury he was playing through was 3 years old). Max Pacioretty goes into this season with something to prove ... and will. I am a believer that Domi will be a step up on Galchenyuk, who is on his way to drinking himself out of the league (think Derek Sanderson skills and head). If Mete, Reilly and Juulsen can be better than rookies, and Carey Price returns to form as one of the top 5 or 10 goalies in the league, this won't be a bad year.

Back to business, if the Habs work it that they are the team that re-signs Pacioretty (5 x $7.5M or something) and then trades him to the Ducks while holding back 50% of the cap, that Anaheim deal would be a good one. Habs should ask for the 2020 1st pick.
The Alzner deal makes sense if both teams are planning to use their cap space at the deadline to move Ryan and Alzner. Long term, these guys aren't part of either team's future.
The Benn/Lucic trade is intriguing. I think the Habs would be better to either take a current prospect from the Oilers (Yamamoto) or push that pick out to 2023 or so. Habs cupboard is getting back to a level where they'd be better smoothing out the prospect supply line.

I'm not saying this about Alzner at all, but there are a great many players -- more than you'd think -- who are quite happy to have a job that pays them a few million bucks for 7 months work and is sure to have them back on the golf course by April. Ottawa would be a dream destination for players that just don't give a ****.

THere's a major difference between NMCs and NTCs. One means mostly that a player can't be MOVED up and down within the organization, as well as having some limits over trade. The other means the player submits a list that is periodically updated that limits whether they can be included in a TRADE discussion with certain teams.
In Alzner's case, he has a 7-team list to which he can veto a trade. Perhaps Ottawa is one of those but we have no reason to assume it is. Also, quite often, players simply waive the NTC (for a small bonus) because they generally want to move as much as the team moving them needs them to go.

Thank you, JP. I agree entirely. I wish there were ways to block or flag certain trolls who spew garbage about players. These guys are the 700 best in the world. Where they fit in that 700 is a matter of debate. But to dismiss players like Pacioretty as "aging" and "finished" or Matthews as "gutless" and "soft" does no good. The Alzner that started the year in Montreal was the one you describe. By the second half of the season, by which time Price was shut down, Alzner was not a weakness. He logs big minutes and plays a smart game. After spending his entire career in Washington, he needed time to adjust to the new system in Montreal -- everyone did. Ignoring the contract, there are only a small handful of teams that are deep enough that they couldn't use Alzner. If the Habs eat part of that contract, he would be well sought after.
It's getting a little tiresome. Habs haters need to get some perspective.

Habs are not going to start the season in tanking mode. If Price has a great start to the season, Pacioretty comes out of the gate hard (contract year, you know) and Byron and Weber get back within the first 20 games, the Habs will compete for a playoff spot. I know that's not what people like to hear but the organization is not about to start out with a plan to lose.

No idea why NYI would make this trade now. What they gain on LW they lose on D. But if they were willing, Habs should probably take it.
Johansson is fine and Alzner would be good for NJ. That said, I'd rather get one of their younger prospects.
JDLR is too good to be given away for a "maybe" pick. A prospect ... sure ... but a pick is too risky.
