Not necessarily,if they retain some money and take back another bad deal, they may not have to lose a 1st rd pick, but this trade as a whole doesn't make sense for Dallas as they have some pieces to resign in the coming years

There's no market for Lucic among armchairGM's, so Edmonton will have to keep him.

Which is fine with me. At Christmas last year, Lucic was on pace for a 59 point season, easily covering his "albatross" contract. Then he got sick and his point totals plummeted. To give him credit, he kept playing right through to the end, even though he would have been totally justified in taking time off.

So I'm happy to keep him. His illness is under control and he's got a chip on his shoulder from all the negativity. There's a very good possibility that he'll be, once again, the league's premier power forward.

They push money already spent this year to a position they require--a top six LW. They essentially fill it for no cap impact for the next two seasons. They were in on him late as a UFA and now with an even greater need at the position he makes even more sense if they're able to get out from under the Hanzal commitment. Dallas also fills the void left by Antoine Roussel for a strong, physical winger.

After those two seasons, Lucic is 32 with three years left on his deal at $6m ($4.3 in real cash) with a salary cap at around roughly $86m. He's likely even more movable at that point to a cap floor team if his game deteriorates even more by then.

It's essentially a reduced price UFA signing for Dallas.

How many AHLers average 50 points a season in the NHL and regularly finish in the top ten in hits every season?

34 points last season was an anomaly looking at his career totals. He shot a career low 6.8%. Unless he's turning into a stone, those numbers are unlikely to be repeated.

I also think the trade is not good. But a 1st? No way.

Can’t wait to see how great of a season we all see from Lucic this year. Going to be a hungry beast wanting to get back to the playoffs.

So you're obviously aware he may have a decrease in production down the road. You're trading them a chance at a potential impact player for a couple years before they player becomes an asset that needs to be gone. Bad deal. You need to send more.
