Description

Detroit has a major cap problem and needs to sign Dylan Larkin. Habs have cap space galore and need a RD for the start of the season. It's a match. Detroit gets cap relief and a decent RD prospect and what should be an early second-round pick for Kronwall and Veleno. Turgeon and McCarron are a reasonable swap of hometown minor leaguers.

Toffoli and Pacioretty are both coming off bad years. Kings are heavy in RWs and thinner on LW, so positionally, it's a good move as well for both clubs. Habs retaining $2.25M of Pacioretty and lifting another $1.5M for Richards offers LAK a lot of freedom at the deadline to make a big move. This assumes LAK re-signs Pacioretty (hence the Villardi or Kupari) and that Habs don't re-sign Toffoli but there's compensation in there if they do.

Wild could use some cap relief and have a ton of experience and prospects at centre. Coyle is the better player, but Byron is no slouch, and the cap room makes this deal good for the Wild.

Agree, and Kronwall has highly restrictive NTC, doubt if Montreal is on his list of "move to" teams.
The usual too high trade value for Patches.

Wouldn't that be exactly why they WOULD do that deal? He's not part of the long term and they desperately need to make room for Larkin and two more players. I'm all for nostalgia (hell, that's all we have to go on in Montreal these days) but Kronwall is the odd man out.

Toffoli for Pacioretty is a pretty reasonable trade that most people would think favours the LAK. Both are UFAs at the end of the season so the risk is the same. So the prospect trade comes for the $3M or so of cap that is opened up.

Kronwall won't be happy, but he has a 10-team list. He also only has a NTC, not a NMC. If DET gets strapped enough, they could simply waive him. There are worse places to play out your career than Montreal. (Montreal could also make a side deal, eat 50% of his salary and trade him on to another team that he prefers. That's not an option for DET)

I like each deal individually. They make sense to both teams in each case. Not sure they could get done.

Since you can't trade penalties, you'll have to pony up more for Veleno and Villardi/Kupari. Lehkonen? Ikonen? Fleury? Habs have some interesting early-stage prospects to offer.

Detroit does not need to make room to re-sign Larkin, and certainly are not giving up a guy they drafted in the first round a month ago. They have $6.7M available with Franzen's LTIR. Larkin is looking at a 5 or 6 year deal at around $6M per.

That still leaves them 2 players short of a roster. Somebody has to go. That said, I had also factored on taking on Weiss and Ouellet's cap hits, so the payback to DET isn't as good. Habs would have to throw in another pick/prospect to rebalance this -- or take Howard for the year (giving back Lindgren or McNiven) if Bernier is expected to take the #1 job.

Detroit carried fewer than the maximum of 23 players on the roster last year - the minimum is 20. Nobody has to go. And if somebody does go, it is not going to be a cap dump, where Detroit gives up assets just for cap space. A deal involving a useful forward - Nyquist or Athanasiou - is, however, a real possibility.

Also, Zetterberg may not play this year due to back issues, which means there is potential for more breathing room there via LTIR.

Easy No from DET. Kronwall retires a Wing (the Illitches love guys spending their entire careers with them) at the end of 2018/2019. Detroit has over 23 million available to them next year and very little to replace/resign, so trading Kron and Veleno for McCarron and a couple picks doesn't advance their cause. DET is also very light on Cs in the org, so trading a C for 1 season of relief in a year they aren't making the playoffs anyway isn't a reasonable option.

They also have 6.7mm left this year to sign Larkin (if Z doesn't "retire"), and can move Frk and Wit to the AHL if they needed even more room, but those are the "fill-in" pieces for the roster.

You won't know the Zetterberg situation until the season is underway. Also, with only 6 Dmen under contract, trying to run on a 20 or 21-man roster means waiving at least 3 forwards. So who gets waived for nothing? Glendenning? Bertuzzi? Frk? Witkowski? If the Wings want to develop some talent -- Rasmussen and Zadina come to mind -- that means even more player will have to be dumped overboard.

Jesus, just dump Kronwall and your problems are solved.

Don't forget Rasmussen and Zadina. You might want to make room for them too. And, if Zetterberg can and wants to play, why would he "retire" (there really needs to be an NHL arbiter for career-ending injuries) to make room for Larkin?

The Wings are not dumping Kronwall at the expense of Veleno. Period.

Frk and Witkowski are both on two-way contracts and can be sent down (in favor of Rasmussen and / or Zadina) and not have to pass through waivers. Witkowski is a flexible press-box guy because he can play both forward and defense.

Zetterberg would be retiring because his back is too unwell. His back is a legitimate issue and has been for years. Who said anything about him retiring for the sole purpose of freeing cap space?

We are all aware of his bad signings of veteran players, but do you in all honesty believe Ken Holland does not have a plan to re-sign his best player?
