Description

Let’s be honest - no one is really sure what this deal will look like. There are a lot of moving parts, especially regarding all the salary being moved from both Ottawa and Tampa. Here’s my thought process for the two trades.

Tampa-Ottawa
The Senators get back Sergachev, Foote, Gourde, and a 1st round pick for Karlsson. They swap Barre-Broulet for Chlapik in exchange for taking on Ryan’s contract. Drake Batherson and Alex Barre-Broulet played together in junior, and Chlapik will the piece Tampa uses to flip Ryan.

Tampa-Montreal
The Habs take on a lot of salary, but they’re rewarded with Chlapik and Raddysh. Chlapik - a coveted center - can play right away, and Raddysh is pretty close. Tampa gets back a cheap but effective forward on an expiring contract.

If Montreal’s taking on cap idk if they want to give Byron up. If anything, they’d want a little more considering they r taking Ryan and Callahan. At 1st glance I thought Tampa would have no interest in trading both Sergachev and Foote, but I guess if they get EK...
As much as Tampa needs a 1 RHD, I realized they also lack depth up front, so we’ll see what happens. I like ur idea tho.

I definitely see your points. It’s so tough to figure this one out. Ottawa wants to move money, Tampa has to move money. The bold have a ton of prospects to give but do they want to clean out the cupboards entirely? They can keep paying in prospects and picks to get rid of salary and add players on decent contracts. I guess that’s why they’re the pros and we’re the arm-chair GMs lol. One thing I tried at first was having Gallagher come back to Tampa. He’s on a nice contract at 3.25x3yrs, and would give them some depth up front. But they would have to move Johnson, Miller, Palat, or Killorn to fit him in. That might not be a bad option though to save a little money for a comparable player.

Can’t see Montreal helping out two division rivals like that unless they really make it worth it, which they don’t. The two prospects are nice but that’s a lot of salary for a long time and a team rebuilding can’t afford to take that on. Especially with Carey and Webers contracts already being substantial.

If I’m Ottawa, I’m asking for Sergachev, Point, and a 1st round pick. It seems simple enough, but the issue with including Point is that he’s on his ELC, and provides Tampa with cheap offense that allows them to add Karlsson and keep most of their team together for one more season. There’s also the potential that he signs a Kucherov-like bridge to give the bolts 2 or 3 more really good runs. HOWEVER (we can argue back and forth for eternity) the counter argument is that by trading Point, you maintain your prospect pipeline, and the opportunity for several young players to step in and provide that same impact on their ELCs.

Any deal for Karlsson ends with Brayden Point, all other prospects are on the table though. Subtracting point from the 2C really hinders the Bolts, he was the best forward for the Lightning in the playoffs outside game 1 against Boston and he is still on his ELC this year so they can ice the best possible team for a cup run if they got Karlsson. If they want Point then the Lightning are better off staying pat and trying to get Karlsson next year as a UFA if he doesn't re-sign anywhere.

Nothing says he only has to go Tampa only.

Yeah with all the stuff holding this trade back and with the complexness of it, they may be able to pull it through, but at this point I doubt he goes to Tampa. Ottawa needs to go to someone that at least has the money for next year.
