In the interest of fairness I guess. I don't think you get Vatanen and Anderson without putting in another notable player, and given the Ducks position going into expansion it would be pointless to make a trade with an equal number of players in need of exemption going back.

I also try to not be the fan where every trade my team makes is a steal. I could be erring on the side of caution here though.

Jarrett: Looking back on one last discussion about the Leafs signing of UFA Dman. Here's a scenario based up the Ducks......This is happens in June 2017 as teams are preparing their protected lists.
Ducks have "lots" of young Dman who will be under long term contracts or at least control:
Desperes, Vatanan, Linholm, Montour, Manson. Bieska and Fowler have one year left then UFA. If it appears that Montour or Fowler might be taken in the draft, it would be advantageous for the Ducks to trade at least one of them.
Leafs protect Rielly and Gardiner, but after that there are a bunch of guys of the same calibre...Carrick, Corrado, and one of them might lose one of them. If the Leafs think Montour would be a better "3rd guy" then they could trade Carrick and Corrado for Montour.
Same in goal. Right now the Leafs would one of Bibeau and Sparks...unlikely to get drafted. But the Ducks have Gibson and Andersen. They would be sure to lose Andersen in the draft. Especially if the Leafs like Andersen and had him signed to some term and the Ducks like Sparks.....Andersen for Sparks and a prospect or pick. Brown, Leivo Lindholm...maybe even two of them.
Anyway he get the idea..There will be lots of dealing next June, especially for guys that will be exposed in the draft, that could help a lesser current NHL team.
