I don't think its an overpayment. This deal fills our two biggest weakness, another center who can score and win faceoffs and a top D man. Both players are cost controlled and locked up long term. While at the same time you shed bad contracts. The deal needs to include Schmalz and #8 as they are the 2 most valuable parts of the trade going back to the Sabres. It leaves us with enough room to sign JVR and have play to resign Sikura and Rutta a year from now.

I'll second the WAYYYY too much for Buffalo. Rumor is the ask from Montreal is the #3 for ROR (which I highly doubt they get). #8 and virtually anything not named Kero on that list is > #3. Schmaltz and Murphy are close to Ristolainen on their own. AA, #8, Murphy and Saad are honestly to much (I would want Hossa for Moulson with a million retained included to do even that)

Yeah this is too much. Have to remove Schmaltz at a minimum, but I would argue we need to leave in the 8th and get a 3rd round back from Buf. Sorry but the value is not correct as you have it but the idea is not a bad one at all.

I feel like you really hate Schmaltz. He's a future core member and hopefully career Hawk. Two first round picks on top off all the other players.....it's just a ridiculous amount to give up. Schmaltz will be better than OR in a year, book it. "But face-offs blah blah...." Face-offs are so overrated.
