If I was Buffalo I'd have a good think about that trade, and probably would do it.

As buffalo, done!

I love McBabe, but damn, I want 3OA, plus it fits our timeline better.

Plus in the last 4 drafts we have had the same pick back to back 14+15 we had 2OA, 16+17 we had 8OA, so this trade basically says we miss the playoffs then we get 1OA 1OA back to back and get Jack Hughes too. Dunzo.

I don't think a single Montreal fan would tolerate trading the #3 overall pick for anything except trading down a few spots at this point.

This is a starter point people. The Habs asked about ROR and they said 3rd overall and were told no right away. Montreal countered with Pacioretty, Buffalo said no.

Montreal is not giving them 3rd overall for ROR and if the price is to much for him they will just move on to Lindholm, who is actually the player I would like them to get.

I agree this is probably pretty close to what happened. Botterill apparently likes pacioretty, i just hope he has him valued closer to most sabres fans than most montreal fans. There would have to be significant adds with pacioretty. Hes 29, coming off a bad year, one year away from getting a brinks truck dropped off at his door, right before likely becoming a declining winger at a position where you need to produce offense. Ror is signed 5 years until hes 32. Even if hes not the franchise #1 that habs fans want, its a good deal. And a great deal better than pacioretty.

To be honest, the value is probably there but ROR is simply too old for the nucleus of this team. Even though those are good players we'd be patching holes yet again. We don't need a just a ROR, we also need an Eichel.

Price and Weber are simply ushering in the new regime at this point. Keeping the pick and simply drafting Kotkaniemi should be a wiser choice in their eyes as well as the media and fans.

I agree on some points here, he is going to get a pay day, that’s a guarantee, probably looking at $7.5 million or so. Don’t think he is likely to start declining to soon though, he plays a similar game to Kessel, uses transition and skating to score which will probably be the way of the league moving forward after Vegas had such success playing like that. I don’t think they would have to add significant pieces, I would say they add a second round pick and then another conditional pick whether Pacioretty resigns or not. But ROR isn’t a great deal better te Pacioretty, he plays a more valuable position but Pacioretty is an elite scorer while still being one of the best defensive wingers in the game and would actually take RORs spot on both the PP and PK, with him on those places Buffalo wouldn’t even see a decline in either of those units.

i agree with a lot of this, i just dont want to be the team to take him. i dont want my young gm to be in a position where he has to double down to justify the trade. offensive players decline after 30, thats not even up for debate. will he still be a good 2 way winger, scoring between 20-25? i can see that. is that player worth 7.5 for 7 years, if those years are 31-38? not to me. i think most people would acknowledge that ufa is the absolute worst place to build your team, we are paying ufa prices after trading our talented 2 way center, locked up for 5 more years. i would rather move ror to a team with younger talent, where we get the benefit of players growing into talent while not taking up chunks of salary cap.

I can understand that, that’s how you need to build teams now, UFA market is just ridiculous on July 1st aka the Lucic contract. the main fear with Montreal fans and Pacioretty is that he has never played with a real center, yet he still puts up 30+ every year, example 2017 he had 35 goals with Phil Danault as his centerman. So Habs fans look at it say ‘well him with Eichel or any real top 6 center and he turns into a 40+ goal scorer’ which would be a disaster for Montreal to have to watch, especially in division.
