Description
Read a not so good article on the athletic about the jets and their cap hell that I disagreed with fairly strongly, so to mark my opinion on what they should do, here it is:
Contrary to the article, Myers contract is fair value to the team, while I disagree Perreaults is good value, despite the good metrics he has
I’m a big proponent for trading Perreault, but this team right here shows you that on paper they should also trade Myers. Keeps them under the cap and would net a nice return. However, this is their year to win it all so they don’t. Brian Little will either be traded in one of the next offseasons or left exposed to expansion
With Mason on the roster they are over the cap after bonuses, so instead they part with him. This allows them to stay under cap once Niku and Vesalainen start the season in the Ahl and get called up at injuries
Everyone says they’re looking for the Tom Wilson, Brayden McNabb type player which yes can be a good thing. But let’s not get tied up too much in the recency effect, just cus those are the two teams that just made the final. It’s not always like that, and also don’t forget the Jets have the biggest team in the NHL
Of course, maybe Cheveldayoff does listen to that opinion and if Tkachuk falls, tries to trade up for him in the draft -potentially using Kyle connor or Tyler Myers as trade bait

I kinda disagree with your definition of cap hell. You can't be signing one of the top UFAs in Stastny and claim cap hell. It's for the same reason that Jets will no be able to afford to sign Myers next year.
Somehow the Jets have to rid themselves of Mason (maybe not necessary or practical) but next year Perrault, Little , Kulikov should be moved.....even for free if you want to sign some of those RFAs to long term deals.

I wasn’t the one claiming it to be a bad cap situation, the writer of the article I reference in the description was and I am pointing out I disagree

Lol 8 mil? And... bridge deal, Hellebuyck agrees to this b/c he knows this is best way to keep team together, don’t forget he is rfa and while goalies don’t usually bet on themselves, he is confident enough to do this

i said 6-8 mill, so 8 being the most he would get, and 6 being the least, shouldnt have to explain that its not rocket science, also maybe could be a 5-7 or something along those lines. he was a vezna finalist, had a great 1st and 2nd round. im sure he gets paid a lot more than 4.5 mill at 2 years. thats a show me contract, im pretty sure hes shown them

I don’t think the jets would be in cap hell this year but it’s probably next year they might have some problems

Laine need a contract and won’t be cheap, Myers, Trouba this year and wheeler all need contracts plus Hellebuyck

The Jets are most certainly not in cap hell now or next year.... but we do need to move 2 guys (which you've done) or 3 guys if you want to resign Statsny. And if we do resign Statsny it should be for one year. I think Roslovic is ready for top 6 duty, but even if you disagree with that, anything more than a year of development in a nice cozy sheltered 3rd line is overkill; the trajectory of him compared to a young Claude Giroux is uncannily similar.

The only problem with your team besides the fact you signed Connor Hellebuyck to a 2 year extension after he's already been bridged is that our bonuses plus Vesa's bonus which isn't included outweighs our cap space which means we'll have to pay it while we're trying to resign Connor, Laine, and Wheels. Trading one of Myers or Kulikov alleviates those problems, and lets you give Helle the money he deserves and the term we need.

I love Myers, but the bottom line is he is a 3rd pairing dman. Only by virtue of the fact he plays on a team with a 24 year old star and the incredible hulk of the NHL. If you pay Trouba in the neighborhood of 6mill, and Buff is making 7.6mill then you have to give each one enough minutes to make those contracts worth it. There's only 60 minutes in an NHL game and that means Myers is not earning his 5.5mill. Poolman looked fine in his games last year and should play enough minutes at a quality worthy of a million dollars (or more since his advanced stats suggest he is worth closer to 2mill).

Just a reminder that Little has NMC after July 1- so no trade and must be protected for expansion.....

Yeah!! So did you or did you not give 8 mil as a number? Not rocket science wink I understand it's a range, but I chose the high end of your range to "question", because no way should a goalie make more than everyone else in a star studded lineup. More-over, a goalie who has only really played 1 real year in the league. Vezina finalist, yes. And maybe shouldn't have to "show them", but while Jets would like to give long term 6-6.5 mil contract, they also have rfa rights over him and can point out 1 year in the league doesn't earn you the big deal. They will also explain this isn't done for lack of faith but because they will be better off in keeping the team together if they bridge him. Likely he does get the 6 yr 6+ mil contract, but this is an idea to give them a little breathing room for next 2 years. And of course, RFA's don't have complete control, so maybe he agrees. 7 yrs by 5.5 is what I would like to see, I am just trying to keep the AAV down.

Just to point out to all those commenting on the cap hell part in the name, this was in quotations and is not my take on their situation, but one that I am disagreeing with. I am saying they are not in cap hell, maybe a cap squeeze sure.

shoot, you are right. This opens up after two years but would likely be after expansion, unfortunate. Could still move him in that summer if they need the cap space I'm sure, just could potentially be harmful for them in expansion draft. Maybe he ends up sticking around for the full thing, who knows. I think that's the worst contract Chevy has signed, too much term for that price AND a clause on it.

It becomes a M-NTC after the first two years of his extension. If Seattle stays on schedule with its expansion draft 2020/2021, Little can absolutely be shipped off to Seattle.
